It's pretty much the same argument as why we like to keep discus in bare bottom tanks. The river rocks traps deitrus/ debris which can build up organics etc etc.Curious...why do you say no to the river rock?
Curious...why do you say no to the river rock? I'm not sure how I ended up with the butterfly pot-bellied gold fish, but they're different. I think the Gold one is having bladder issues. Given it's been floating upside down at the top of the water most of the time then after resting turns itself over and swims about normal. Not sure what to do for it yet.
The biggest is the least pretty IMO...in pic #5. I'd have to measure to be positive, but he is at least 27"-29" TL and FAT....LOL! The pond ranges in depth 8" ledge to 3' below the waterfall, so the survive the winters.

David your pond, yard, and house are all beautiful. I would love to have a pond but with the raccoons, birds, and bears around here the koi would be sushi.

Thank you Chris! Too bad about not being able to have a pond. The previous owner had trouble from time-to-time with birds and I did as well for the first year. Knock on wood, I haven't had any trouble since I put up the metal sculptures next to the pond. We have had news reports of bears coming into neighborhood yards, but I think because Interstate 81 is within shouting distance and our street gets regular traffic it may protect us a bit more. Fortunately, the traffic noise is at a minimum.

Jennie,
Quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten
Now THAT is a serious Koi pond DL! Makes my little 2000 gal pond look like a kiddie pool! Very nice, do you still have it? Bet all that equipment cost a bundle to run each month. Where are your koi now?
Barb
NOOO! this not my pond, this is the pond at the dealers place. I used to have a large pond but it was sooooo much work. Filled it in, built smaller pond and we sold all our koi and just have a small pond now. Less mantainance than my discus, lol. Anyway David is someday planning new pond for his front yard and I mentioned I would get pics, but since I went that route I got the specs for him too. All the plumbing is housed in a decorative shed(overkill) but hey.....Anyway this dealer gets KILLER koi!
ps be happy you have little pond!

Oh I see. Now I don't have to be jealous of your fabulous pond DL! I was almost going to take a drive to CO just to see it! David, let us know when yours is built like this one. Then I will drive up to see it!
Barb

Ha! got plants and stuff going on around and in it now but still low key. That was it shortly after we built it.
