I have a 55gal tank with a sand bottom. My temp is 84. I would like to keep some altums. Will they work with discus if so where can I buy some?

They can be together fine...I kept a tank of heckels with altums for close to a year.....Only reason why I separated them after that is aesthetics...The bars of the heckels and altums were just too much....looking the tank "stressed" me out.
Most that have kept these fish tend to lean towards keeping them separate...and I tend to agree.
One note though... your 55 gal is way too small for altums...they really need larger taller tanks to reach their full potential.

I am sure they could be kept together but I wouldn't do it. Altums deserve a tank dedicated just to them imo and a large tank at that, I don't think your 55 will be big enough either.

Comfortably numb.
what size of tank is good for them to grow

Don't let the things you can't do stop you from doing the things you can!
They can easily be kept together as their water requirements are similar. However, I agree that your 55gal is too small to keep them well, especially since both altums and discus should be kept in groups

these are angels, how come they need that much space
Jennie,
Quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten
Hey Jen,
Altums tend to grow larger than regular angels. I have two different batches...7 yrs old and some 18 months old. The older ones had a top to bottom fin span 11"-12" tall but now have lost some length on their top dorsel as they age.
I keep mine in a 30" tall tank.
They recommend that we offer 20g per fish as adults.

I've always wanted to keep altums, but I thought they were too aggressive to be in a same tank with discus. If that's not the case, I might give them a try in my tank.

I have kept my Altums and Discus together for many years without any issues.
The Altums in photo are about 15 months old and share tank with Santarem Discus and 9 L134 Leopard Flog Plecos.

I've seen many times ppl keeping them together in a large tanks , but as mentioned b4 aesthetically wise Altums need their own tank to complement their striking pattern

Vera,
I have 2 of 6 original Altums that are 7 yrs old but starting to show thier age. The biggest one that died was 12" tall. Trying to find a photo.
The other group of 6 (dime size body) I got last Aug /09 from Oliver(Belowwater).
They are now 3"-4" body and 9" tall with fins.
