I am thinking about buying some Altums. What are the prices for small juvies.
What are the sources that supply them.

Well said Jeff. many of these old myths need to die.

Nice to know that it was a myth about altums and discus.
i have four altums with five discus. all are doing just fine. the altums has there pecking order and the discus has there own. i keep them in a 150 tall tank, plenty of room. these are my first altums, and i have really enjoyed them. i couldn't imagine having discus without them. i purchased mine from kingdom come discus. good luck

Very interesting thread !
Nice to get all of this super information, folks.
Have had many angel tanks, and bred them, but never had Altums - itching to give them a try.
Altums with discus when I first kept them together:
They were separated after about 6 months not because they weren't compatible, but because I wanted the discus tank to be a Rio Negro heckel biotope:
PARASITES AND DEATH eh?!!!...What a load of rubbish, that sounds like information from about 100 years ago when nobody knew any better!
@Altum Nut, you say yours were 12" from top to bottom?...I've heard a few different people say they can get to 18" tall no problems, in your experience, is this likely to happen?
@JeffreyRichard, I have always wanted to try Altums but i'm sure my tank is too small, it is only 25.5" deep and i feel that that wouldn't be enough for them?...If the Peruvian Altums are not true Altums, does that mean that they don't get as tall and a bit easier to keep? Thanks for any info people!
They can reach 18" under the right conditions which includes tank size and mulitple feedings on live foods. If captive in our tanks, there top dosal will shorten as they age past 4-5 years. So in there prime adult stage...it is possible at 18".
Mine reached thier limit because I was not able to offer live foods. They are very hardy once acclimatized and are not any different to care for than Peruvian's.
I have leaned more to Discus at this point but still enjoy my current group which are happy swimming alongside various Discus and L134 in my 30" tall 110g.
I may challenge myself in the future with a new group with a bigger tank and offer only live foods to see if results differ.

Thanks for the info Ralph, it's always good to hear 1st hand information from somebody's experience and not 'a friend of a friend!'.
On ebay there are some Peruvian Altums (i know they're not the real deal) for 19 quid each and was toying with the idea of all 5 that he has.
Do you know if they stay about the same size as standard Scalare or a bit bigger?
Thanks for the info so far geezer!
