Default Seachem SAFE measurement question =)

Does anyone know roughly what 100mg of Seachem SAFE 'looks like'?

I don't have a scale, so I was wondering if anyone has been roughly measuring 100mg using a teaspoon... is it half a teaspoon? quarter? more? less?

    thank you soooo much =)

P.S. it's on sale at IGO PRO online if anyone is interested

    1K $29.99 (saves $10.00)
    4K $72.99 (saves $36.00)

    peace,
    Elyse

I don't know what 100 mg is on the tsp measurement, but I have been using 1/4 teaspoon per 50 gal.

    just sharing

One tea spoon is equal to 5 mg/5 ml therefore 100 mg or 100 ml is equal to 20 tea spoons. .....To convert mL to teaspoons, use 5 mL as a conversion factor. That is, there are approximately 5 mL in 1 teaspoon. So if you were prescribed 10 mL of a medicine, you would take 2 teaspoons; 15 mL is equivalent to 3 teaspoons, and so on.

    1mg = 1ml ?

Doesn't the density play a role,
I read a teaspoon holds approximately 6000mg of table salt,
    or approximately 5000mg of water...

soooo I'm guessing a teaspoon would hold between 4000mg and 6000mg of safe....I really don't know, I need to find a scale, because if a teaspoon holds 5000mg of safe....and you need 200mg of safe for 30 gallons of water....then thats about 1/20th of a teaspoon ?!?!?! lol

To get really technical, you will have to get a scale. Then, figure out just how much chlorine/chloramine you are actually trying to remove from your tap water...more measuring, and then take into consideration the amount of SAFE that needs to be used at your specific temp....1/4 tsp+50gal for me is what works, and is simple...Bill

OKAY I finally found what it says on the bottle!!!!!
    1tsp per 200 gallons,
so, 1/4 tsp per 50 gallons!
Dudley, Marc, William and Eddie are right on =)

Why didn't Seachem say that on their website? why did they have to list a mg mess lol

I'm waiting for my shipment of SAFE to arrive but 2 questions come to mind:
    1) Is there a negative effect if you "overdose" the amount of SAFE you add? I'll be using a 33 gal rubbermaid trash can and will "approximate" the dosage between an 1/8th and 1/4 of a teaspoon.
    2) I bought a 2.2 lb tub. It seems this will easily last me a year or 2. Does SAFE expire?

    1) I'm sure you can overdose anything, but I wouldn't worry about guessing between 1/8 and 1/4 of a tsp. I think the bottle says you can double the dose, if needed without harm to the fish.
    2) I wouldn't worry too much about the shelf-life of SAFE, given the time period you are concerned about. I believe it is a mixture of inorganic chemicals that are all pretty stable, assuming it doesn't get contaminated with something else during the time you are using it.
