Good Tank for Discus?

I have an opportunity to get my hands on a very unique 200 gallon tank.



As you can see, it measures 48"L x 48"W x 20"H and is euro-braced on all sides. I will build glass overflow towers around the stand pipes.

With the 20" height, would this tank be appropriate for a Discus colony?

I love square tanks. Sounds like it would be a nice discus tank. It would be nicer if it was higher, but should be fine.

A 20 inch square base 40 gal tank , 20 inches high has a huge surface area to volume ratio. A 20, inch square cube makes a very good Discus pair's breeding tank. Much better than the popular 55 show so they are good discus tanks. I prefer a 75 gal because the width is narrow enough to provide good visibility for 6 adult discus but I use 40 gal breeders which are 36 X 18 X 16H inches and these have an excellent surface areas to volume ratio. I use these as breeding tanks but they work best as fry grow out tanks.
IMO, a 20 inch tall tank is fine for Discus. Any deeper than that and the routine maintenance becomes more difficult in deeper tanks. 16 to 20 inches tall both work well for adult Discus, If you can afford a taller tank the discus will be happier in the deeper water.

Too bad - would have been a great discus tank.
I know they're few and far between, but if you ever get an opportunity to buy a somewhat square tank like that, with at least a 24" height - grab it !

I am actually looking at getting a 48"L x 36"W x 24"D acrylic made for me. The guy quoted me an amazing price!

I have a 36x36x27 150 gallon in my office waiting area with my own discus and rams. The square is pleasing because it has good depth to work tank scape in. It can be a bit difficult to place. I think a large square would be cool in the middle of a room.
