Beef Heart Sticker shock?

Hi all,
Do me a favor please and post what Beef heart costs in your area...( and where that area is).. Also give some details too on if it was whole hearts or cleaned ....My supplier of many years just doubled his price to me...they blame it on the fuel prices.Fuel has gone up but I didn't see meat prices across the board double... and I can't see the correlation of 90% increase in price of BH....me thinks I need a new supplier.

Al, I no longer feed it, but my local butcher used to GIVE it to me!..Wife says now it's about the price of burger, but I'll go in to town first of the week and ask..Bearing in mind we are in cattle country....If it's cheap, maybe we can ship it like FBW's and BS...Gary

I just recently paid ~$3/lb for my whole heart not cleaned (fresh) --- about 3 weeks ago in Dayton, OH.

Before that, the same place, I bought it for $3/lb for a whole frozen heart -but- it was mostly clean and I did little work to get it in shape.

Not sure if the cleaning is due to the frozen versus fresh.

I don't buy the fuel argument. My thinking is it's gotten a lot more popular (pet food, ethnic foods, etc) and they figured out they could increase the price and it is still cheap enough that not too many people will complain.

The price of meat will continue to go up at least untill the end of July. It is very possible that your guy just didn't pass on small increases since you are most likely his only customer for the product.

Bought my hearts in Dec 2010 time frame. I had to buy a box with 4 hearts (five lbs each), not cleaned for $40 in Kissimmee Florida. So about $2 a lb.

Al, my BIL works in the meat dept. of local grocer. He's told me that meat prices have gone up because of feed prices going up, and maybe that has to do with fuel? I don't know. Plus I'm sorry I don't use BH so I can't give you my price around here.

Corm is used in the fuel so both feed and fuel go up...then meat. Yikes.

I don't know if this will help you Brew, but it's worth telling about. I gave up on beef heart several years ago. The labor involved was simply too much for me. I now feed 99% fat free gound turkey breast. It's available in all grocery stores here in the middle of nowhere. The cost is $4.99 for 20 oz's. The labor involved in preparing it is to put it into a gallon freezer bag, squish it out, toss it in the freezer, and break off what I want to feed every morning.

I have never fed this exclusivly, but I it is my staple food. I feed something live at least once a day. But I'd much rather go out to the red wiglgler cultures after work with beer in hand and pick worms to feed than kill my poor old hands cleaning and grinding beef heart.

Beef heart recently jumped from $1.29-1.69 per lb trimmed to $1.69-1.99 lb trimmedn in my area.

Al David and I . are waiting for some coming from a slaughter house on the Big Island "Hawaii". I let you know but here is hard to find it . And Hawaii has the reputation of having the highest prices of the Country. So If is cheaper, here . you can start your negotiation with the phrase even in Hawaii......lol. I let you know.

I got 10lbs today of the whole heart here in Phoenix with the fat trimmed off it for $9.75

Have not checked recently but I normally pay $1.19/lb whole heart at the local supermarket. Available only as a special order. They charge me $1.39 if I ask them to cut it up.

I too have pretty much stopped using it. I don't plan to make any more when I am done with the 20lbs I made last time.

The price of everything in the grocery store is projected to go up between 5%-15% this year (if it hasn't already). If the price isn't higher, check the actual size of you are actually getting. Our favorite orange jucie is now only 59oz.. not 64.
