I bought a small container of red wrigglers from Petsmart for $4.50. It contained 50 wrigglers.
I'd send everyone a starter culture myself, but I'd be slam out of worms in no time. I got my first batch from Wormman.com
See post #5 of this thread to see how I mange my cultures: http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showth...79933-red-worm

I never chop worms. I pick the worms that are of suitable size for the fish to eat whole. The fish much prefer them that way. Besides, if you pick ones that are so large they must be chopped up to feed, you are feeding your fish all your breeding worms and you will decimate your culture in short order.

The last time I got beefheart the price had doubled and it came in a vacuum sealed package too. The quality was poor compared to what they normally sold and said that is what they are getting now. I may switch to pork heart, just as good or find a local butcher where I can get whole hearts. I have a few bins of red wigglers but they are a delicacy and only fed occasionally just because the bh mix is more convenient for me plus it can contain whatever additives that may be necessary. Beefheart is a staple for keeping discus that I don't see a work around so will keep looking for better sources.

I just bought some white worms culture. Looking forward to trying them out.
I should have said I guess that the heart I get is trimmed to butchers standards and I believe cut in thirds. Still plenty of trimming to do in other words, but I'd expect that at around $1 a pound.

walmart had beefheart at my place, you can check. I think it was about $5 for 4 lbs. Most of it was already trim. It was clean.

You know, I remember I did check now... and I got a weird stare. In fact, I checked Kroger's too the same day and they at least offered to special order it for me. It must be a regional thing...

I live in Omaha, Nebraska and a local Hy-Vee ordered me some beef heart (had to order a whole case and I only purchased one - so far) and it cost me around $5 for a 4lb heart and I just had to trim it a little bit, pretty clean to start with.
I got a weird stare too when I went up to pay.
hey Bill where are you finding beef hearts for $2/lb.? please share your source our local butcher here in Addison, IL has upped his prices to $4/lb. claims fuel and feed prices like many others say but seems it's only because it's more in demand now, he used to give them away! pvz3353@gmail.com, thanks
