They are anaerobic bacteria. They use sulfer instead of oxygen to complete electron transport chain and make ATP after and they are found in hot water of around 90 degree CELSIUS . Should not be a problem in our discus environment.
Anyone know anything about sulfur bacteria?
Your discus are talking to you....are you listening

I believe it's a concern if you have substrate.... don't know too much about it, but anaerobic sulfur bacteria builds up in substrate. Sometimes they create little pockets of hydrogen sulfide gas which may be harmful.
I have had problems with it in my gravel.
I guess it depends why and what Pat is interested in... I believe they're also used in de-nitrifying filters (I know basic theory of how these work, but not really much else and have no experience with it). I unfortunately do have experience with those deadly gas pockets though

Hey Pat, as in a well ? Common in some ground water. My sister's easy fix was to aerate the holding tank to out gas hydrogen sulfide.
A carbon block filter then 24 hour aging with air stone should give you good discus water. Not a hazard but produces a gas that can't be filtered out.
