Story goes I had a 29g planted tank, it was fully cycled and had fish for quite some time no problematic. I took everything out and went bb. Added sponge filter, the tank had no fish at all in it for about 1-2 weeks. I recently bought 6 juvie discus and moved them in. I had two filters and the sponge filter running but my water would not get clear... always cloudy, not much but noticeable. I took out the smaller filter and started doing 50% wc 2x daily instead of once a day. Still nothing. Any ideas guys??

maybe the tank is cycling again.. since you didn't have fish in the tank, for those 2 weeks.. so the bioload was low.. but now with fish in there, the bio load is increased..!?

so it sounds like a bacteria bloom... since tank may not have been cycled anymore.

cloudy white water killed my discus after we moved the fish tank from one apartment to another. The fish survived the 90% wc. The filters weren't touched at all. But three days later my hubby vacumed the brown stuff that settled over the top of the gravel and that started the problem. Before that my discus was fine in a fully planted tank. He passed away.

gravel can hold pockets of nasties.. that can be released when gravel is disturbed by cleaning.. hence the reason, your gravel should be no thicker then 1/4 " or go barebottom

the bloom should be no problem correct? I'm doing total of 100% a day( 50% in morning and 50% around 330

if it is a bloom, that is because you tank in cycling.. so it is normal, and will clear up.. my took about 5 days.. or so.. but it scared the hell out of me

It may be cycling. Check your ammonia and nitrite to be sure.

Ok well if it is cycling what do I do, I have s 75g display that is cycling. The 29 was set up and had cycled long ago so I added the 6 fish.

If the Tank is going through a Cycle again then you will need to do water changes about 2xday to make sure that the Ammonia and Nitrite levels don't get to high.

i don't know if NOT having fish during that amount of time, was an issue or not..

Nothing ever quit running just no fish for two weeks. I'll just keep up wc and should be fine

thats what i am saying.. having empty tank with NO LIFE, would/could affect the BIO Filter, so putting fish into a "new" tank could be root of problem... just like a a brand new tank, with no fish, will not cycle..

Yeah I understand, well if I do two 50% wc a day should be good right??

Yes it should. But check your ammonia and nitrites to be sure you keep them in check. The BB will die in a cycled tank with no fish.

Thanks. I'll keep up with it and keep up the cleaning and wc . I siphon every morning and night and do wc in morning and after I get home from work.
