You would never need to use 2x4s. I used thin, 1/4" thick strips of oak. They are below the tank braces actually. You could even use plexi or other material if you wanted. Yes, lighting is much more effective when hung as opposed to lying on the tank. It gives the light a better spread.

Yep, if I did end up hanging again I would have to use plexi, the wood blocks out light

Mhm, see with the 2x4 and size of my dw it would keep back of tank very dark

2x4s are soft wood like pine or fir, too big, and unsuitable for this purpose. That's the reason I used 1/4" thick oak. It's very hard, and strong, allowing you to use thin, narrow strips. My strips are only 2" wide, but some of the DW pieces are 3"-4" across at the top, and almost 30" long. Some of the curved pieces are longer than 30", just cut at an angle at the top to allow them to be attached. It's no problem for the oak to support the weight without flexing. The 2" wide strips have little to no effect on lighting at all. 3" long self-drilling star drive deck screws easily hold them in place.

Yeah, we are framing up right now so I just grabbed some treated from the plates and used that as opposed to buying deck boards. I had used 3" stainless so pretty much same thing. Started with a bit and was just as easy. If anything I may put a piece or two just coming up out of the water, don't think ill hang anything again. Good look and all but the wood would always be visible no matter what the size
