male is usually shorter and pointed...that is unless their Austrian/Dutch!!
OK, you guys will laugh but can you tell gender differences during the actual spawning event. I tried to google fish penis and you get nothing useful. So I have two of Kenny's Curipera Cross and they are currently spawning on the heater (not glass). Both appear to have a egg laying tube so suspect a couple of girls. So what does the male's apparatus look like?

You need to take picture during breeding time (when their tube is down). Second picture looks like the male to me (if this picture is breeding time)
Both look to be female to me, though the second one is a little odd looking. Not sure if that is a small tag at the back of her tube or if it's just slightly uneven, or if he is really hung.

I have several picture during the spawning but none of the pictures show the tubes. Wrong angle.

What exactly did the second fish do while the first was laying eggs?

Came behind and did similar run like the first. The first fish was the smaller one. I am uploading a video and will provide a link in a couple of minutes. It is a 55.5 MB video.

That's the typical male behavior. Perhaps in the first picture the females tube is just already receded enough that the size difference between them is that apparent. I'm beginning to convince myself that's what happened. Sure would be nice if one of the real experienced breeders came along and took a look.

Just a nice amateur guess from me, but the first looks to be female and the second looks like a male. It'd be SO much easier if that male would just display a proper male apparatus, or grow out a nice long, tapered fin, huh? LOL
