Cool
I stayed up all night tuesday because i caught these babies spawning! Funny thing is i had them about 12 hours. As soon as i threw in the spawning mops it wasn't 30 minutes later and 2 of them were getting spunky.

The second spawn was from the same male but the female was my red cap here is a few pics of her. She is probably one of my favorite goldies. I have caught the goldie bug thanks to my baby girl. We now have 21 goldfish not including a few 1000 fry.
Can you explain "hand spawned"? Did you get the eggs out by squeezing the belly of the female and do the same with the male?
Exactly, you have to wait until they are already spawning to do it. You can't just go squeezing them to get the eggs. You can youtube people doing it. Some people are really against it, but the facts are most hatcheries do it that way. I usually let them do it then collect the eggs. I wanted to make sure i got some this time since it was my first oranda spawn and i was excited. The second spawn i just collected mops.
So mops are the spawning surface? Congrats on your first oranda spawn
Your discus are talking to you....are you listening
We had some fantails awhile back and grew out probably around 200 to half and inch then culled down to about 15-18 that were decent. So I would say maybe 10% were even what i would consider pet store grade. We got 2 or 3 I felt came out pretty good.
Well that's super interesting! Keep us posted, and CONGRATS!
Stacey
Yeah just mops like you would for rainbows. Thank you all. I know they are not discus but they have grown on me. Especially since a year ago the only goldfish allowed in my house were to feed my lionfish. I could not stand them now they are a favorite in my fishroom. So much personality and you don't even need a net to move em.
Congratz and please keep up date

Back to Discus grin:
In all the years I kept goldfish as a kid, I never paid attention to spawning or even read about how it was done. Goldfish breeding is a complete mystery to me. This thread is really interesting! I'd like to see how the fry continue to develop.
Wow thats cool I dont think I have ever seen goldfish spawn or even seen wigglers they are also a complete mystery to me....BIG Congrats!

Really nice, matey!..we've raised Oranda for 30 years, but never tried spawning them..Very nice job!
