I have seen knifefish bully other fish before. I think it would be a 50/50 shot.
Anyone have this combo? I don't have a big enough tank set up at the moment but assuming a big enough tank and the discus were full sized would this work? I might try an african brown knife with my discus as they stay small.

I know when I first began keeping discus I was advised not to keep my BEAUTIFUL brown knife because of the electric currents the knife fish put out. They can cause the discus to become skittish etc... Plus they are nocturnal hunters and can bump into the discus and startle them causing them to scrap into other things. JMHO...From what I've heard and experienced. But I say give it a shot my brown knife didn't seem to bother my discus that much..until he noticed how hungry they were and with a bare bottom they get all the food, he began to snatch the blood worm cube and hover over the pellets until he had his fill. Hope this helps.
I had a black knife back in high school (going back almost 15 years). he was cool, but I caught him sometimes wrapping around other fish - very quickly, just spiraling around them; there was never a lasting issue that I know of, but it was the first thing I thought of when I saw the subject of this thread...

I think I'm going to get a brown knife and see how it goes with the discus, I can always put them in my other tank if things go south
I bought a brown knifefish in QT now, what a cool little fish. My daughter and wife just stare at him, think the discus are jealous.
post a pic, I have never seen a brown knife, am very tempted to get a black ghost but I understand they are quite delicate - more sensitive than discus, is that true?

black ghosts are very cool but they get up around 15-20", they are not delicate, just have no scales so some meds are not good for them.
(but 15-20" would be an extreme size for them in an aquarium)
10" max is more realistic, after quite a few years and a perfect aquarium
From what I've been reading over on MFK if you keep them in a large tank for 3 years they will get about 15" (assuming you are getting them at 4-6") and over a course of 8-10 years they will grow to 20". They live a long time which is cool. African brown knifefish will max out at 10-12" and are slow growers too. Clown knifefish are crazy huge.
