I agree. To show this versatility, I recently set up an AC 110 on a 75 gal. I had lying around to house 8 wild Peruvian Angelfish. On the bottom, I used a piece of gray, Matala media. Next I used a piece of 4" thick, 30 ppm Poret foam. On the top, I used a mesh bag of Sea Chem Pond Matrix bio media, that had been cycling in the sump of my 240 gal. for several years. Finally, a piece of Matala was stuck on the filter's intake as a pre-filter. You simply can't do such things with a HOB filter that uses those wimpy inserts...

I have had all of the above filters...despite liking my canister filter, I find I really like HOB's as well..at like the ease and versatility, and the effect of the "Waterfall" method of adding water back onto the tank. At one point on my 150, I had 3 AC110 and the Emperor 400. I find I actually Prefer the AC110 myself.

I also like the Marineland Emperor HOB too.....too lazy to make a prefilter for it.

No need to make them, I use these on all my intakes (AC HOB and Fluval Canisters) http://www.amazon.com/Rinas-Garden-O...2972986&sr=8-9
I bought brown ones at a local fabric store so it blends in to their environment and cannot be seen much.

I have been running a Rena XP4 on my 135g for four years by itself. I recently convinced myself I need to add a couple of HOB filters in addition. I purchased two Emperor 400's, each with the adjustable intake. IME, the adjustable intake does not reduce flow, but rather pulls in water from both the lower and middle sections of the tank. I almost have too much current. I do like having four filter media sections between the two HOB's. I can attend to one a week and keep biological filtration in the other three, or so I think. Keeps me on a managable schedule with a peace of mind.

Disclaimer...multiple filtration sources are NOT a replacement for water changes. I still do minimum 50% every other day and have had success in my low-tech planted Discus tank. Just my two cents and what works for me.

I was running 2 AC 50'S on my 65 gallon tank they worked alot better then whispers HOB. How ever I just got a Marineland C-360 Canister and I must say it is really nice. i dont even hear the thing running. It primed really easy and started with out probablys at all. I switched to this because I got Tired of The HOB. But I will say AQ is the way to go there really nice.

I just purchased a 2217 for my new 72G bowfront, I was thinking about getting another one, would I be better off purchasing a AC instead? I'm afraid that the 2217s will generate too much current. This is my first Eheim filter, I've had Renas in the past so I'm not sure what to expect.
