    Default Battleship cove --amazing place

    HI all,
This past weekend we had a scout sleepover at a military museum and memorial. We went to Battleship cove in Fall River Massachusettes. This place is amazing. They have put together several world war 2 era ships as a museum and you can actually stay over night in the bunks . The memorials main attraction is the Battleship, The USS Massachusettes.... You can read the history here... http://www.battleshipcove.org/ In addition to the battle ship, they have destroyer, the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr, a Sub, The USS Lionfish, and a Russian Built ship, The Hiddensee. There is also a museum with several gun boats. Oh and the battleship itself, is just full of all kinds of models, memorabilia, artifacts and info. It was an amazing weekend..We got to explore every inche of all of them.. I don't know who enjoyed it more the Parents or the kids!

Great experience for the kids and adults. Nice pics. We just went to Pearl Harbor in Feb. Did the Bowfin submarine, the Missouri and stood on the deck where the Japanese surrender documents were signed and of course the Arizona Memorial. Spent the entire day and also got to talk with a couple of actual Pearl Harbor veterans. What an experience it was and every one should get a chance. It is touching and thought stirring, it makes you appreciate your freedom and how it is protected.

Wow Al, this truly give one a appreciation for our vintage ships and how folks lived on and used the ships during wartime.

If you are interested there are two threads in my homesteader section, one on the Sun N Fun Air Show which featured vintage warbird and one on the Discovery flyby on it's way to Washington DC. Both thread full of pictures.

    Thanks Pat,
I have to take a look...I really enjoy learning more about our History and the sacrifices made to get us here today...We have a Sub base in Groton Ct that has a sub museum, thats on the agenda next.

    Bill,
It would great taking the trip you took as well.. one of the great things about this one, was we had a presentation given to us on the history of the USS Massachusettes and then we had a follow up with a crew member that was on the ship the 4 years it was in commission. That crew member was still proud to this day for what that ship accomplished in the short in service....and not a single crew member was lost in all the battles it saw.....actually the opposite, they participated in saving several airmen that had gone down.

    It was a perspective I won't forget.

    Hi Brandy,
Well, combined my son and I probably took hundreds of pics....But I weeded thru them so as to not post any of the other kids or parents pics...and when I was taking them, I planned that, so I tried to be sure I had pics without people.

Alot of the exploration is done inside the ships and thats a maze of corridors and rooms...so you never really feel crowded. The exception being at meal time.... I didn't realize there were so many people there, until I was standing in the chow line at Dinner... That line seemed to run from one end of the ship down the other!

This is my favorite. My son really enjoyed the pictures too.
Those scouting trips are always great fun. The kids and the parents enjoy them immensely. They form memories that will last for a life time. Last year, we went to "Night at the Museum" at the Museum of Natural History in NYC. They had a blast. So did we.

Enjoyed seeing the pictures Al! And it reminded me of our son's same experience as a scout long ago on the battleship North Carolina in Wilmington NC. The boys and men got to sleep in sleeping bags on deck, they had a ball!

Thanks Al, I served aboard DD850 JPK JR from late 59 till 62. Greate experiences.Late 62 went to DD 1015 & OFF TO THE Cuban crises which ended quick.[ so much for PC ]. When you were on the sub did you notice lathe behind the electric board, the op could not stand up straight. I went to R.I. for a car show & the guys iwas with went to battleship cove. Six street rods pulling into the parking got some attention. Thank for the memories Al.
