So i have an overflow and a shower style faucet pretty clse to eachother (5-6 inches). If i leave the faucet open just a bit would this actually change the water in my tank? i am leaving for 2 weeks and would like a simple way to do the water changes. I can ask someone to feed the fish but not do the water changes.
    TIA

They can go 2 weeks without food and are much less likely to survive 2 weeks of food and waste product with no water changes.

Well I for one think this is an amazing setup if you have the technology to think it through. I would like this for my tanks but I have tanks on different levels of my home. But for my main fishroom, this sounds like a plan.

What was your initial cost for all this?

Sean (ZX10R), can you design something like this and we can share ideas?

    Good job!

    Thank you.
Initial setup costs for the whole thing were..
    pvc pipe
    2 pumps
    2 bulk head fittings
    several meters of R/O line
    2 float valves
    sump tank

and then I also bought my own diamond drill bits to cut the holes in the glass

You notice I didn't put a dollar amount to anything.. That's because I am living in The Netherlands and many things here cost much more than in the US.

I hope you design something similar and more sleek.. :-)
Don't forget me when you start making money selling it ;-)

just a quick update. Still using this little gem of a rig.. My partner calls it a Rube Goldberg. if you don't know what that means google it..
I have to work away from home, frequently for a few days at a time and trust me no-one wants to do water changing for me. Everything is going great. Downside : it cant wipe down the glass.

I just built a 300 gal glass tank and will be making an atomated water change as well, however, the only difference between your set up and the one that I plan on making is that I will have my "rain barrel" above the level of the tank so that it will use gravitation to feed the tank after it's drained instead of having an extra pump ...

Any updates on your set up ? perhaps any pictures ?
