this sounds like a solid system good job,you should post some pictures.

my only question is how do you deal with the chlorine in the tap water that gets added?
or does it sit in the barrel long enough for it to de-chlorinate its self?

Thank you. It wasn't so much about know how as it was determination.. It was "dammit i put a lot of time in to these fry, I am not going to let them die when I'm on vacation"

That was my concern too. It only removes 30% or so of the aged water at any one time and I also run some carbon through airline filtering in the aging barrel.

I have a drip system for all of my 20 tanks for about 2 years. No major mishaps and very happy with it. All my tanks are drilled for overflow. The incoming water is at 82 controlled with a shower control valve (cheap). I am on well water, so no issues with chloramines.

i know this may sound crazy......but hear me out.
a member on a different forum was on a construction crew that was demolishing a old hospital.
he ended up taking a IV Drip machine......they were going to throw it out.
he rigged the iv machine to his 120 gallon heavily planted tank, the iv machine doses his ferts daily..

maybe you could hook up a similar system dosing prime daily to your holding tank

I've been gone for almost a week now. I have 200 fry ranging from quarter size to 3 inches + in this tank. I just got a message that they are ALL fine. not a single dead one AND eating like pigs.
    I am so pleased.
    Fingers crossed XX

16 days now and I just got the e-mail from back home.. ALL are alive and fine!
i suspect with that heavy stocking level they would have all been dead in 4 days without this.

Sounds like a perfect system. And a nice read also. I have something similar, but I was fortunately able to plum mine to the house plumbing, so I just add water to my sump, and the extra flows out to the septic. This way I needed no float valves, or anything to fancy, just a garden hose timer, and I am done!

I came back from almost a month long vacation and they were all fine. Granted a bit underfed, since my helpers only came over to feed them one time a day, but alive and well!
I'll be spending the next few weeks trying to fatten them up again before I sell some of them. fingers crossed.

    Nicole,
I think it would be easier to draw a diagram. there are too many hidden parts to get any good, accurate photos
