Be forewarned that you are not allowed to check boxes of fish with your luggage and not allowed to take them on board as carry on............
Hello members,
I'm going to Orlando Florida for a vacation and would like to know if any discus/fish store near by that I can visit. I would like to buy some and bring them back to Canada.
Be forewarned that you are not allowed to check boxes of fish with your luggage and not allowed to take them on board as carry on............
You are welcomed to come down and visit my fish room...I am about 4 hours from Orlando. I could even ship to the Orlando Airport. I have used soft cooler type luggage to transport fish in the past as my carry on. Not sure about restrictions these days.

thanks Graham,
I know you cannot carry the fish, but I didn't know that you cannot put it in your luggage as well. US airport are so strict.
Anyone knows if I can put the fish in the luggage or not?
that's great, thanks Dan.
I will find out if I can carry the fish and get back to you.
No way will they let you carry on. You can't even take a water bottle on because of the threat of liquid / chemical explosives. No liquid or container over 3oz is allowed in carry-on.
I think you would just have to ship like normal mail-order. But, even so, it would be a great opportunity to see and pick out your individual fish -- even if you then had to leave them behind and wait for FedEx...
harris611 makes a good point...you can hand pick your fish then I could send later...
Couldn't you also have the airline ship it on your flight as cargo and pay the fee? That is what they do with Dogs and other large boxes etc.
Having worked for a shipping company before I know that almost ALL of the airlines ship freight.
It would be worth asking the question to the airline.
As bright as the sun and twice as proud...I refuse to hang out under a cloud!
To ship freight you have to be a ''known shipper''. Dogs and cats are pets...fish are not....I've been there on this, US security and Homeland Security are total pains on this.
Depending on what city you're flying in and out of in Canada, the American airlines may or may not carry live cargo.....into Halifax they do not.
Check but I'll bet that Fed Ex won't accept ''live'' for international delivery. Also the shipper may/will have to provide export permits from USDA and USF&W.
It is a complete PITA to ship fish into Canada from the States since 9/11........before that just check the box with my luggage
Export permits are not required for shipping into Canada...Only an invoice for Customs...
Best way to do it is to ship via Northwest or Delta into the airport of your choice in Canada...then go to their cargo and pick it up...These airlines do not require that you are a "'known shipper".
Dan I believe that these airlines use only regional small craft,,,such as Delta Dash. I know that some of the koi people have used them within the States. I know of no one that has been able to ship easily into Canada on an American carrier other than to Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto or Montreal and they will not transfer between carriers.
Have you shipped into Canada on these carriers without the ''known shipper'' status?
As far as I've ever been told the known shipper status is a federal law

My family and I have carry fishes from Asia to Toronto many times without problems. But recently I was told from others that it is a bit difficult to do with the US customs.
Blame 9/11.....good luck
does anyone know of discus breeders in the Orlando area
Not really. There used to be some importers about, but that has seemingly dried up as well. I know Segrest farms, Imperial Tropicals, and 5 D tropicals carry some from time to time, but they are far from discus specialists. The closest I know of is Gabe Posada down in the Miami area.
