1lb bh.. 1lb raw uncooked shrimp.. 3/4 cup flake food
I've been looking through the posts on making your own beefheart. I'm hoping a few people can help by pointing out the recipes that they like the best. I'm looking for something that isn't going to mess up my tank to much and of course be extra healthy for my adult discus. I'm a total noob at this so any help is appreciated.
Please post a link to your favourite recipe - thanks!

Sorry to be dense, but I find myself in the same boat as the original poster. I am getting ready to make my own batch, and find SOOOOO many different ways to make BH mix, and it gets confusing. Also $5.99 for a small package at my LFS is an options, but seems like a lot more than I need to pay.
So do you chop, then cook the above mix? Blend it? How does your wife feel about you using her pans to cook fish food? Perhaps just wait till she is not at home?
nope..
put all raw materials in processor.. and process it up really good.. then put mix in a freezer bag and smash it down to like 1/4".. into a flat pack..
then freeze.. and when you need it.. break off as much as you need to feed one feeding..
NO COOKING>> or thawing frozen foods of materials to make mix and refreezing..
sure there are lots of other methods.. BUT.. K.I.S.S. method is always best!! for your first time

I have a yellow discus. I've heard not to add the shrimp. Also what about garlic? I agree with OP . confusing.

never heard NOT to add shrimp.. its the BEST BINDER to keeping the mix together..
for the first mix.. Keep it Simple.. there are 10,000 mixs out there.. you have to start with at least one, reading or asking for other peoples mixs is just too darn confusing.. hell, some feed just str8 up bh.. nothing else....
buy 1 lb bh and 1 lb of shrimp.. thats under $7.. if you and your fish don't like it.. throw it away..

This reminded me to go set out my beef heart. I've got 5 of them to experiment around with a little bit. Having an free supply of them helps with the cost if i have to throw it away.
the reason i've read for no shrimp is it may turn a yellow fish orange. I've no clue if this is true or not.

Thanks for the recommendations on keeping it simple. I've ordered some beefheart from my local butcher and will give this a go when it comes in on Thursday.

i would recommend making a small batch.. just see how you like it.. and your fish.. don't invest too much the first time
good luck

do you remove the internal parts of the Shrimp?
I like K.I.S.S.
