Elliot I love your planted tank and have probably asked you this elsewhere but do you use fert's? What type of lights?
    Cheers mate

Hey Daniel, thanks! No ferts at all. Just sand and fish poop. No CO2 either. My lighting is LED strip. I take some red tinted, transparent lids from cheap, packed sandwich meat and put a few under the LED strip to add a mix of red lighted spots here and there. The 3rd pic above show red areas.

My plants are all easy, low light plants (swords, crypts, Val, jungle fern, anubias, and lotus.

Sweet mate. I have a new 125 gal I am gonna do as a low tech planted tank with my adult discus. It looks like you have a red lotus under the red light. Is that for growth in the red spectrum, or simply highlight the red lotus's color?
When I get back from Australia in June its gonna happen.
Appreciate your answer Elliot. Take care mate!

The lotus actually grows without the red. Actually just put a couple of new red pieces under the light tonight. Those things are pretty darn Hardy. all the plants that I listed before are the ones that I've learned through trial and error with all sorts of plants. They have been the one that make it a my tank. Only secret I have is let time do its thing. Just like how we all love taking pictures of baby discus as they grow over a year or year-and-a-half, take pictures of your tank with plants at least once a month! You will see the difference! Also, this might not be a great thing for one who keeps The discus, but I don't dig into the sand with the siphon whenever I do siphon. I just hover above it.
