    Default Red Worms

So a guy at my work has some red worms he grows sells the poo and what not. He gave me a few to try with my discus. They seemed interested but I believe they were a little too big. They would get 90% of the worm in but just couldn't get it all down. It was fun to watch though. Anyone else have any experience with these guys?

I feed them to my discus all the time and have 3 bins of them going. The fish will learn to bite them in pieces, but will swallow the smaller ones whole. They are easy to keep and create great compost for your garden or plants. There are several people here who do this, Second Hand Pat, Liz, and I'm sure they would share their experiences with you.

Thanks Len. Do you have you a colony of them you keep and grow at home or just buy them?

I have 3 colonies going. Just keep them in rubbermaid bins. They multiply pretty quickly.

We feed red wigglers and white worms to our fish. Home grown worms.

What kind of dirt did you start with?

Brandon, plain potting soil without fertilizers. A internet search will yield other media which can be used. Link below is my thread setting up my worm bins.

Mostly just shreaded newspaper that has been dampened and a handful of sand mixed in. No need for dirt, but if you want to use some, just make sure it's clean and has no pesticides.

I use the dirt from my pasture area. It is already pre-mixed with horse manure which the worms love.

+1 for the feeding of red wrigglers and white worms. They love 'em.

yes white worms are always a big hit too, and actually less effort to raise them in much smaller containers.

That's a reasonable price. I paid $19 per pound here locally. 1 pound will be enough to start a colony and feed a few at the same time.
