Great idea! Can't wait to see how it turns out. Are you taking before and after pics?
Hi guys just thought I would share a newly discovered product with you. Have a stand with an ugly finish or tired of the black stands? My better half has been bugging me about the black stand not matching our wood furniture. My initial plan was to build a custom stand but unfortunately my time has been so limited it has been in limbo for quote some time.
Today I just picked up a brand new pine stand from an aquarium closeout sale for $80. It's black of course.
Anyhow I had a client of mine show me this product the other day that he used to refinish all his kitchen cabinets. A single kit for $80 from home depot goes a long way with a huge amount of color options. I'm just beginning the process but I will post some updates.
I have many skills when it comes to electrical, plumbing, etc but painting and wood working I am still learning so this will be a good gauge for a "novice"02020181534.jpg020201815316.jpg020201815334.jpg020201815359.jpg

Thanks for the heads up. Its not easy going lighter from black unless you remove it all together. Very interested to see how it works out Ryan.
We're here for a good time...not a long time
Here we are just after the second base coat. Once the glaze goes on it should really bring out the color and grain. Hopefully lol021201811532.jpg021201811545.jpg

So far so good..well covered. Are you applying it with a paint brush, roller or spray on?

The kit recommends a 2" synthetic brush. Covered up the black well. First coat showed a little black. Second no black. The color is supposed to be a dark color. Seems light but the glaze should richen the color

cant wait to see the finished product
Well here we are with step 3. After 2 base coats this is the decorative glaze application. Must admit was a little concerned with the ugly Adobe type color of the base coat but wow what a difference with the glaze 0282018131248.jpg

Nice job Ryan.

Thanks Joe. For a guy with many skills painting is not one but I am pretty satisfied with the results. Will be nice to add another skill to the tool belt. Was trying to match a closely as possible to a mahogany table we have. So far so good. Will see what the final product looks like once the clear goes on.
Overall I am really impressed with this product. This paint is some serious paint.

Hi Ryan, that looks fantastic. For your final coat I would suggest a marine polyurethane both inside and outside. It is the polyurethane used to seal the wood surfaces of boats to protect from sun and water.

You are welcome Ryan, this is how I protect my stands from water etc. It should be pretty easy to find. Ask for it. Another suggestion is to line the inside of your stand with a shower liner and have the edge go up the interior wall about 2 inches. A sump, canister would sit inside the liner. I do this for my two large tanks. You can also add a water alarm to sit inside the liner.
