I always just use salt and vinegar to clean my used aquariums... maybe just add a bit of salt, give it a good scrubbing, rinse till all clear and sun dry?

That would be a good idea except they are clsealed tops with 2 small ports. But im sure a salt solution and rotating barrels on the ground could work.

I cut the tops off closed ones with a reciprocating saw. Leave the lip, as they can warp a bit without it.
Bleach, cup per 10 gallon is a fine.

Cool Adam thankyou! I am gonna store these in a closet so i chose to have the tops closed. Gonna pipe them with a pump out top ports to fill tanks.

Sounds good, just make sure to rinse until the smell is gone. I usually drain and fill a couple times with some dechlor and let it dry.

Hey everyone,
So i have cleaned my barrels over and over and have even stored bleach water in them. I let them sit dry for a couple days and the vinegar smell is still strong enough that when you take a wiff it pierces your nose. So do you think this is harmfull to the discus? I have now filled them up again and have them soaking in bleach wTer as we speak.

Try baking soda to neutralize the vinegar... and then Prime to neutralize the bleach. Then rinse, rinse, rinse.

Thats actually a great idea thankyou! I did use prime the other day to neutralize the bleach and will do that again. I talked to a discus breeder tonight and he told me that back in the day. (Old school). They used vinegar to lower the ph and it should be fine. I would still rather clean out as im using straight tap and my stendkers like it just fine. Gonna do baking soda tomarrow. Thanks again!
