My favorite tank mate for Discus are Rams, but I'm prejudiced because I breed them.
So I've restocked my cardinal tetra school three times in the last three years and now that I'm doing my WC's in the morning I can see why.
Cardinals seems to wake up slower than discus with the sunlight. They are pale and motionless while the discus are awake and prowling for a blue and red snack. I haven't seen a successful take down but if this is happening every morning it is just a matter of time.
My discus also will not tolerate the existence of endlers, red cherry shrimp or even amano shrimp, it seems my discus are more cichlid than some.
I have some sterbai cories, 2 bristlenose and my discus. I'd like to have a school of tetras but cardinals are not the solution. Do Rummynoses have the same problem?
What larger tetras have people been successful with? Congo? Red eye? Bleeding heart?

My discus will not eat rummynose, but cardinals and emperor tetras do not last long.
At my age, everything is irritating.
I do good with rummy nose. In fact i just got 25 from snookim ? John today.
Pristella (sp?) OR one of my old time favorites... Lemons!
Either are not as big as Congo's or as long as rummy nose but definitely too big for most discus to eat. Even mid-sized lemons are too big for them. Adults are definitely too big. Get them happy and that yellow is hard to take your eyes off.

Lemon Tetras were my very first fish as an adult (i had gold fish as a child). A nice school of 8 or more keeps them from being nippy. A very beautiful, underappreciated tetra.

Red Phantom tetras or GBRs.
I love Lemon Tetras
I like Black Skirt Tetras. I’ve got 10 and they are doing well with the temperature. Not your typically super colorful tetra but I find that the black and silver is a nice contrast against the vivid Discus colors.
They have a life span of 4 years. If you treat them exactly like your Discus there's not much else you can do to keep them happy and healthy. I understand that domestically bred Rams are more resilient that the Asian imports, but all I've ever had is domestically bred so I can's say for sure if that's true.
