Ok I’ve got to say you people are paranoid!! Think about it? And this is America! Who really cares what you’re doing? You really think the government is listening to us. A bunch of discus keeper? People think individually we’re important. We’re not. Yes companies are trying to get you to buy. Been going on forever. I love Alexa! Couldn’t care who’s listening. I’m just not doing anything . Next back in 98 a movie came out that was pretty shocking and seemed truthful. It showed how it was done. Enemy of the state. Great movie. Great cast! That was 98. Yes if they want they can count how many times you flush the toilet now . So give them a flush in recognition . Let them know you know!.

lol well good for you Tom. Its nice to see you are so accepting of your loss of privacy. I wish i could be so free with these things. I just have such an unreasonable expectation of rights and privacy . I don't know maybe I should be more carefree about this stuff . I mean seriously rich corporations and the government would never do anything unethical ... never ..nope. .. 100% trustworthy... umm yah sure.

Thinking about it further.. I think the core problem is privacy should be sacred. Instead of everyone thinking its ok if people dont complain... and your expected to "opt out" Of this or that or it means you accept. The default in a free society should be you have to "opt-in" to loss of privacy and personal data mining and selling of that data. We as individuals should really be in full control of our data. It saddens me that so much has been lost with regards to privacy and personal rights. I must be getting older but do feel at times like we are no longer on a slippery slope..we are in freefall as our toys distract us from looking down or back where we were.

lol Al! I haven’t lost my privacy. Reality is nobody cares what I’m doing. Yes they have the ability but do you really think they are going to invest anything to know what I’m doing? Why? Unethical companies!! Of course there are! Middle class America owns stock in those companies. Stocks up who cares! I know it sucks (I own no stock) but that’s reality. Who really know the ethics of the companies they own stock in? Yes it was a better world before. But new technology is here. If you don’t keep up you will be left behind. I’m teetering now! My car is telling me more than I want to know! And if I don’t use my blinker damn thing is pushing me back!

Tom you are too too funny. Ever been the victim of identity theft or A data breach? Or are these things not something thats real for you?
Do you not think that Facebook manipulates and Google manipulate what you see based on your Data? Of course they care! Its how they make their money and protect their business interests.

Do you not see that that by tracking everything you do you give control of your life to them .. It enables companies like amazon to steer you towards products they want you to buy. Companies and Governments can show you "News" and " information" based their algorithems to manipulate your view of a politician, political situation, potential law. The more information they have on you the easier it is to manipulate you. That you think it isn't happening just shows how good the system is.

Its really not paranoia to think this is happening.. its reality that surrounds us day after day.. And we let it happen because its the easier path and honestly don't want to be bothered thinking about it. Too much work. Easier to just accept it as part of modern life. But its not necessary for modern life.
    .

There used to be a a saying .Freedom isn't free. Its something you lose easily and often can not get back. Alot of Americans gave up their lives to protect a way of life that valued Freedom. I Don't take that for granted... not ever! Historically the world is full of events that shows what happens when we overly trust those in power.

Remember this .A company doesn't care about you and your rights.. You are a means to making money. Thats all. So to Answer if anyone cares about your data and what you do. The answer is yes. Anyone that stands to profit from you financially or politically . That is the world we live in.

There is an organization that is a good resource on these issues...
    https://www.eff.org/
    Electronic Frontier Foundation

Its well worth spending some time there if this discussion is interesting to anyone here .The issues they focus on are relevent to this discussion.

As proof of my previous post..

This article is more than 9 years old.
June 29: Updated with statement from Facebook, from the author of the study, and from the editor of the academic journal that published the study.

Facebook is the best human research lab ever. There’s no need to get experiment participants to sign pesky consent forms as they’ve already agreed to the site’s data use policy. A team of Facebook data scientists are constantly coming up with new ways to study human behavior through the social network. When the team releases papers about what it’s learned from us, we often learn surprising things about Facebook instead — such as the fact that it can keep track of the status updates we never actually post. Facebook has played around with manipulating people before — getting 60,000 to rock the vote in 2010 that theoretically wouldn’t have otherwise — but a recent study shows Facebook playing a whole new level of mind gamery with its guinea pigs users. As first noted by The New Scientist and Animal New York, Facebook’s data scientists manipulated the News Feeds of 689,003 users, removing either all of the positive posts or all of the negative posts to see how it affected their moods. If there was a week in January 2012 where you were only seeing photos of dead dogs or incredibly cute babies, you may have been part of the study. Now that the experiment is public, people’s mood about the study itself would best be described as “disturbed.”

The researchers, led by data scientist Adam Kramer, found that emotions were contagious. “When positive expressions were reduced, people produced fewer positive posts and more negative posts; when negative expressions were reduced, the opposite pattern occurred,” according to the paper published by the Facebook research team in the PNAS. “These results indicate that emotions expressed by others on Facebook influence our own emotions, constituting experimental evidence for massive-scale contagion via social networks.”
and that was in 2014. Wonder how far they have come in 10 years.

An interesting article on the battle in Europe over privacy and technology.

    https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2024/0...h-eu-drop-dead

Europe is arguable light years ahead of us in this regard. The fact that websites have to post their cookie policies and ask you about your preference is a direct trickle down to us from Europe's GDPR..General Data Protection Regulations.

We could learn a bit from these laws in that you as a consumer can have your cake and eat it too. You can still have your technology and toys but more control over your data.

AI, in the future will know exactly who you are and what you did. It will be judge and jury given time. We already lost most of our privacy.

I hear you. But nothing is telling me to buy anything! Yes if I talk about lawn mowers I may get adds and write ups on lawn mowers. Good info. Not sending me out to buy unless the price is what I want . Now if we’re talking about women’s panties and I start getting adds I’m not going out to buy any . Now yes in this country some may believe upon reading the constant adds they need women’s panties. Not my problem. Though some say they’re more comfortable . You still decide for yourself. I own 1 credit card and a debit card. I pay with cash for everything. Card is for emergencies. Doesn’t even have a chip in it. My debit card is only used to open the door to the atm of my bank and the atm. My savings accounts are unattached to anything. I can’t even move money through the computer. ATM card is to my checking account. So no as of yet I’ve never been the victim of fraud. You need to have info out there for them to steal it. My wife twice in the last year. A few years back my MIL twice on her debit card. She lived way out on the north fork was in her 80s and only use it at the supermarket. Sorry Al I know what your saying but I’m not going to let it bother me. Both of the incidence’s above were fixed and the money stolen returned. Whoever did it was never caught.. Why would they stop? Next even if caught they wouldn’t do any jail time. They’d be right back on the street going right back to business. Crime pays!! Criminals have rights! We’ve put cameras on cops so criminals can use the film to say the cop mistreated them in their case against the cop. Not their case for the crime they were committing. Which even though they were convicted their right back on the street. The police officer killed here on the island was killed by a career criminal with 21 arrests. His last arrest was for carrying an illegal gun. Go figure. Yes we’re more worried about cops beating up criminals. Why because cops work for the government. Lawyer’s know they can sue the government and win. Cause the government is just paying with middle class American tax money .

Tom we are on two totally different wavelengths. What you just posted though important really isnt relevent to this subject.. If anything its exhibited that paranoia you mentioned.

Seriously though.. no clue why anyone would willing want others to have access to things that are private.. to use as they please without permission. I posted a bunch of valid info and arguments and documentation. And yet in response.. just a lot of "well thats the way it is and its ok"

Not really finding it compelling, definitely self defeating at best. To each is own. I have brought this subject up for years on Simply and will continue to.lf not for any other reason than to remind myself whats at risk. I think I will bow out abit here... my forehead hurts from the brick wall.

Last night my DVR recorded a Nova on PBS, Season 51 Episode 7 entitled "Secrets in Your Data." The description reads, "Alok Patel takes a look at what happens to the personal data shared on social media and efforts to maximize benefits without compromising personal privacy." I have not watched it yet but perhaps, if interested, you can stream or record it in your area. The definition of "personal privacy" has been eroded and redefined. Personal privacy has not only been compromised but the door is so wide open that it is hard – maybe impossible – to completely maintain one's privacy.

Back when computers and the internet became more "personal," there were alarms raised about this data mining from businesses. They assured everyone that this would never happen. It was accepted as inevitable by the youth and sold as being "free" (google) and a "convenience" to the existing generation. I grieve over this loss in our society. I cannot number the times that I have countered a person's statement, "Free is good." Not always, perhaps if ever – unless it is a genuine benevolence on another individual.

How many of us give our bank card numbers when buying off the internet. I was ordering things from a business a few times without a problem. Then one day I received a text from that business asking me why I cancelled a large order. I then checked my bank account and $3400.00 was missing. That was what my daily limit for that account was. Long story shot. I got my money back after 9 days; I don't know how they stole money from the "bank" through my account. The bank would not tell me how 'they" stole 'their" money. Said that was a security concern. All they told me it was not my fault; it was a third party. The teller told me that the same thing happened to her daughter and you would think your money would be safe in the bank, she says.

I saw a part of that 2 days ago and I found it very interesting. Unfortunately, it was on at 1am and I was heading to bed. I don't have a DVR so I hope to catch it again sometime.
