Oh Cary!!!!!!! You do need to explain the bleach thing. I'm with Ed, is this for hatching???? I've always used rock salt with a little bit of Epsom to raise the PH.
Cary, could you please elaborate on the use of baking soda and bleach.Originally Posted by CARY_GLdiscus

Decapsulated eggs (freshly decapsulated...not canned) hatch much faster and provide a much better hatch rate and they can be fed in their entirety...even the unhatched are edible. Add to it that there is no worry of fry ingesting shells and there is no reason not to decapsulate...

We never use a bright light, not necessary unless you are harvesting. We keep a small under counter fluorescent light on in our breeder room 24/7 and that is all the additional light our bbs get to hatch. This dim light is behind a stack of 75 gallons. IMHO, using bright light for hatching BBS is a waste of $. Maybe the additional heat accelerates the hatch??Cary ol'e drinking buddy, whats up with the bleach??

OK OK HERE GOES
THE BRIGHT LIGHT encourages hatch and also warms the water another key role in hatching brine
Baking soda raise's the Ph and keeps it there also best for hatching
Bleach softens the shells which will increase hatching to!
Now You may think your getting the same amount in 24 HRS
But I get the same hatch out in 15 hrs. IMO I believe that I get a better hatch out but I know that I get it faster!
De caps are good to but IMO nothing beats live and moving! to encourage a good appetite!

Isn't this a good topic for the library or as a sticky? Using bleach and baking soda as Cary mentions it improves hatching rate by almost 50% by increasing hatch numbers and lowering time. Well mentioning for those interested in breeding not just discus but other cichlids as well! No wonder he's "the man"!

Cary,
you can hatch freshly decapped eggs and get maximum yield plus the benefit of 100% edible....no shells.

Hi guys, I have had some great success hatching BS, by just adding 35 grams of salt to one litre of warm water, (about 28 degrees) adding 3/4 of a teaspoon of eggs and putting them in our dark airing cupboard. Our combi keeps the temp constant and I get a huge hatch rate. I only use light when harvesting, then syringe them out and feed. All done in a home made set-up consisting of a cut in half lemonade bottle, some airline hose anda small whisper air pump. EEEEEasy

Thanks Joe,
I have tryed it before and you are right! however for some strange reason I keep buying the cheap stuff and cannot lose my old ways LOL!

BINGO!
For most people...hatching and harvesting Sea Monkeys should be a pretty simple process. I think the biggest mistake most people make is buying cheap, or old eggs....they don't hatch worth a chit...then they go on a hunt for 'secret recipes' and other magical formulas to get them to hatch, and it all turns out to be a big PITA...

The problem with people idiot proofing things, is the resulting evolution of the idiot....
Hey Joe,
when you decap and hatch out , have you ever tried freezing the decaps..then hatching? Give it a try sometime and let me know how you make out with hatch rates..I accidentally froze some decaps, and they still hatched out at a decent rate!
