I use raw shrimp and salmon in my seafood mix. Its all processed in a food processor.
Eddie
Raw salmon is fine if it is ocean salmon. Landlocked salmon can pass on any freshwater parasites they carry.
Mat
Right Matt, forgot to mention that. Sea salmon!
can you even buy land locked salmon..........it's in no show case around here
I was pretty sure they dont raise land locked salmon. Their super high protein diets made it not feasable to raise in recirculating systems...hence ocean ranching.

*Edit* Looked up landlocked salmon. Apparently it is a subspecies of Atlantic salmon. Even when the ability to go to SW sources for migratory/spawning purposes, they dont....staying in FW at all times. IMO, if you're going to feed salmon to your fish get the cheapest stuff which is usually from Walmart. The only salmon they sell comes from Argentina, which is ocean ranched.

Ryan,
I was refering to the Chinook and Coho Salmon transplanted into the Great Lakes mostly, although here in the Pacific Northwest, we have many lakes with salmon that have been placed in them. Kokanee are landlocked Sockeye Salmon that spend their entire life landlocked in a freshwater lake and run up streams and spawn.
Farmed salmon does not have the nutritional value of wild salmon. I would not even use it myself. In fact, I don't even eat it myself, either.
Mat
I do get the cheapest stuff here in Okinawa and there is no freshwater salmon.
Think it's probably because it's an island........in the pacific ocean.
Eddie
The only Coho I see is in a can.............farmed Atlantic is readily available
I bought a very expensive (as in I've never bought shrimp so expensive for myself) 2lb bag of shrimp farmed in Indonesia. Nowhere does it state if is Salwater or Freshwater, should i avoid it then?
When science and magic collide, the story begins.
Ed they'll be fine, just get a little bit of seafood sauce for yourself. Buy the cheapest cocktail shrimp they got. If you can get North Atlantic prawns they're even better...they're wild and have the guts etc with them.

hi all do any of u have trouble feeding ur discus raw beefheart cuz my discus seem to have trouble eating my beefheart (not the mix)? is it becuz the meat is still too tough?
thanks.

Well if its not processed through a food processor or meat grinder, it has to be cut to super small slivers. They can't eat a chunk of beefheart.

Eddie
ya i saw that just wondering cuz i tenderized the meat really well yet it still doesnt go well with discus. must the meat be soft enough that it literally breaks apart when put under a little pressure?
thanks.
