Hope you dont mind if I ask Zero... Where are you purchasing your discus? With that investment on the line most breeders etc... would be willing to work with you on your time line. All good advice here. I would ask for a sponge filter too from the breeder as Alpine stated. Amen to Chad. BH and Graham agreeing.

Not sure if that product you mentioned is avaiable in the States......Marineland Bio Spira product has been discontinued....needed to be refridgerated. Meaning icepacks and overnight shipping......Tetra has a new product & worth a try.

Nice discus Zero.... If you look at the farm pics on that web site you see crazy amounts of fish in small tanks. They look good and healthy though. Are you in the USA?

I'm running a similar situation now...I'm in the process of setting up 9 tanks at the same time & have discus within 2-3 weeks. I just won't risk it. I have a few extra tanks (5) that are fully cycled with different fish. I moved fish from these tanks to make space for the new ones. Yes, they will be crowded, but crowded on cycled tanks that I can make daily water changes. My new tanks will be ready, when they are ...., meanwhile my new discus will just have to live in a condominum and not their new mansions...

Go to a local fish store and buy, beg, borrow or steal seeded filter material. You can stave off some ammonia/nitrite/nitrate issues through heavy planting, but then the cycle takes forever too.

As for the seeder material from a store, wouldn't that run the risk of disease? Many (not all) fish stores do not really manage the health of their stock. Churning product is the name of the game, so I would be suspicious of the filter media from most stores.

What about buying a whole lot of cheap lucky bamboo bunches. From past readings, I seem to recall that these are pretty effective at soaking up ammonia and nitrites (not so good at nitrates, but who cares if there's lots of water changes).

Around these parts, you can get really cheap bunches at local asian markets. If you get them at decorator stores, they will be pricey.

Throw them out once your filters are completely matured.

Just an idea since we're brainstorming.

OOOPS. Just noticed the dates of the posts. I guess I'm several months late to the game.
