Default How long before your bio will drp in a sponge filter?

I've moved fish out of my QT and still have it running empty. How long can I do that before I'll have to recycle my sponges?

Just put some ammonia in there once every couple weeks, they stay alive a long time

Ok i have 4 or 5 pair. Pluss a large show tank. So i move fish and set up tanks all the time. My local pet shop got me going on this new stuff START SMART. This stuff instantly cycles your tank. I have been using it alot the past 3 mounts with no problems. Jerry

Another option is just put a few CLEAN BN plecos in the QTs and feed them vegie chips--spirolina tabs. They will keep it going. That's been my method,

Just feed with pure ammonia keeping it at 4ppm. Once your tank is fully cycled you will need to feed every other day. Just keep checking ammonia levels

couldn't you just leave some food in there and just let it decay? ? ? without having to add fish. . . .?

I would not recommend doing that. Much better to use ammonia no nasties can develop like it can with decaying food.

A lot of SW people use pieces of raw shrimp to start the cycle. I don't know why shrimp, but that's what they use. I don't see why that wouldn't work in FW, but don't know.
