Thanks for posting Josie! I will try it out.
So my question is.............if we use this then why keep a sponge in the tank also. Like you I do daily water changes in my grow out tanks so I think I would rather have one of these than the sponge that has to be periodically cleaned. Sponges can get pretty dirty and slimy very quickly in a heavily stocked grow out tank. The sponge is also a collection point on the floor of the tank for gunk and it is a pita to clean around. Thinking out loud but I like it on the tank wall and not having to clean. How much K1 did you use. Was that about a cup. How many can I make using the gallon size you sell?

Agreed, I'd be interested to do an experiment with just this as media. After all that is the only reason most of us use sponge filters, simply for bio media, we don't generally care about the other forms of filtration. I could see this being especially advantageous in fry tanks actually, since that seems to be where my sponges get the worst, with all the BBS floating around. I really like the idea despite the time it takes to seed.
For everyone that didn't see, Josie is offering this stuff at an INCREDIBLE price. K1 media goes for over a hundred dollars a gallon on the regular market. So thank you Josie for offering such a great deal. I sent you a pm about my potential order.

I always thought the sponge filter was great for providing micro-fauna as a first food for fry. I suppose you would lose this, as the K1 is encased in a plastic container.
Do BBS get caught in the fluid bed filter?
