i've noticed one of the discus has red at the base of his pectoral fin. He may have had this all along, but i've not noticed. Any indications as to what that might be, or is it normal in juvenile discus?

Eddie is correct, IMO
Not a big problem and not going to kill the fish: but probably annoys you to look at
A few water changes more than normal (keep that ammonia down)
Maybe some Anti-Fluke by Live Bearer (good stuff)
Or salt
The red: juvies bang into things and get that (imo)
yeah, i've been doing daily WC's @ 50%, so ammonia & the like is in check.
I've still been dosing the salt. im just worried about this redness in one of them. I may be paranoid being so new at this. I've also noticed that his face seems a bit translucent and "veiny", if that makes sense.
What would you use to treat this, Eddie?
(I mean, the white specks)
Nothing, I've had many many fish have these white dots on the fins and its never become an issue. I've even gone so far as cutting the fins to remove the spots so the fins would grow back without them. It was pointless and stressed the fish more than needed. I say let the fish be if its not bothering them.
Yeah or they might be there forever. Its more aesthetic than anything.
I'll grab some when I get home this evening.
so...my fish started showing signs of bacterial infection... popeye & red veins in the fins. I've moved them to a medicine tank and started treating with maracyn 2.
I'm not sure what to do at this point though - the med tank is brand new - so it's not been cycled. Maracyn requires a 5 day treatment with no water changes.
suggestions?
Thanks Eddie!
