    Eddie,

Your recipe looks great for Discus. What kind of liquid vitamin do you use? One purchased from a tropical fish store? What kind of pellets, any kind? Thanks, I think I'd like to make my fish some homemade food one of these days.

Any pellets will do but I am using Discus Spectrum because they are too small for my discus to mess around with. I use Centrum liquid vitamins for adults. I use a coffee grinder to grind the pellets and oatmeal.

Great! Thanks Eddie, I'm going to give this a try when I'm sure all of my fish are well again.

Sounds great Anna, let me know how it works out for you. My 55 is BB so I siphon any remaining particles after about 5 minutes. The fish do pick at the bits so there usually isn't much to deal with.

I am also going to go with Cod on my next batch as it seems to have a higher protein content.

    1 cup raw tuna
    4 shrimps
    4 mussels (occasionally)
    1 tbsp ground pellets
    1 tbsp ground oatmeal
    1 tbsp liquid vitamins
    1/4 cup steamed spinach
1 raw egg, yolk and all
    1 crushed garlic clove
    1/4 tsp paprika

I just throw everything into the food processor and viola! I don't process it into a liquid though. It has some small bits still visible. Maybe 15-20 seconds max. Then I plop everything in a sandwich size freezer bag and throw it in the freezer. Once frozen, I tear the bag off the block and place it on a chopping board. I cut the block into nice cubes, about the size of a FBW cube and then put all the cubes into a freezer bag and place it in the freezer. It's easy to just grab a cube and throw it in the tank.

    Hey Eddie,

Just a thought... have you considered looking for small sized stackable ice trays? Might help you get the same cubes with less work?

Yeah, me too. The whole cutting up on a cutting board works well for me though. I got that one from another simply member.

Guys I don't use the ice trays.. as I feed about 1 lb a day here..but I would think something like those plastic parts storage boxes should work fine enough....maybe something like this...

    I.D. 9-3/4" L x 6-7/8" W x 1-1/2" H.

I am though looking for a seafood only mix. No BH involved.
You could always substitute krill for the BH. The krill has beta caratein in it which is a natural color enhancer. My discus will not eat the krill by itself but I can trick them into eating it if it is mixed with other food. I like to mix in the small bits of flake food that are too small to drop right in the tank with my mix. That way it is not a complete waste, and it adds some extra vitamins.

Exactly. My fish same deal won't eat it plain but I threw it in my BH mixes.
Could do it your way as a substitute for BH you bet.

This is the one I used the second time. No clams in this one. Fish seem to like it better than the first batch I made.

    1 Lb. Shrimp
    1/2 Lb. Salmon
    1/2 Lb. Cod
    1/4 Lb Tuna
    1/4 Lb. Scallops
1 cup Spinach (boiled 30 sec.)
    1 Tbsp. Oatmeal
    1 Tbsp. Paprika powder
    1 Tbsp. Spirulina Powder
1 Tbsp New Life Spectrum cichlid Pellets
    2 whole cloves garlic

Ground up oatmeal and N LS pellets in blender then add paprika and spirulina
Processed garlic in food processesor. Then shrimp, then scallops. Cut other fish into pieces and processed then added powdered stuff, spinach and processed until it was a thick mound of gunk. Placed in freezer bags made indentations in bag and froze on cookie sheets.

This is my extremely simple first and only seafood recipe so far...

Probably not the best one on this thread, but my discus go crazy over it and it's super quick and easy so I thought I'd share

I only have 6 discus, so portion as necessary:
    • 1/2 lb. shrimp (de-shelled)
    • 1/2 can peas (pushed through a strainer to remove shells)
    • 1 very ripe banana
    • AngelsPlus Flakes: Garlic, Vitamin, Deworming, Earthworm
    • Fry Starter 1.5mm
    • Various other tropical flakes/pellets
    • Freeze Dried shrimp
    • Frozen blood worms
    • Frozen brine shrimp
    • 1 tablespoon of water

I blend all of them together in a blender until it is a tan looking mush.

Flatten it in a gallon zip-lock bag overnight. Cut it out of the bag once frozen and slice into squares. Toss frozen squares into another zip-lock bag and freeze. My discus devour it!

Bree, looks like a decent recipe but I would highly advise against adding the deworming flake to the mix. This may cause problems down the road. You never want to medicate fish at small amounts, constantly. The deworming flake is made to treat fish and it also has strict guidelines on how to use it.
