terra cotta is safe
Where can you get safe for aquarium clay pots? How can you tell if they are safe and not leaching lead or some other toxins?

I used clay pots from Lowe's for over a year and never had a problem

What do you all use to seal the hole/s on the bottom of the pots?

Just cut a piece of plastic (like a fish bag) big enough to cover the bottom and run a little bit up the inside of the pot. Then fill the pot with what substrate you plan on using.

yup, I bought a bunch of clay pots from the end of summer sale, for about $1 each and there aren't any problems. I bought them as 'breeding cones' but the Discus don't seem to care for them.

another way to cover the bottom hole is to layer the bottom of the pot with filter pad. This allows for easy draining of the pot if you decide to remove from tank.

Not a sponge, these guys...........http://www.amazon.com/Scotch-Brite-G.../dp/B000BARG8S
No soap. I've used them for years when cleaning out tanks and never seen them pre-soaped.

I geuss what I was getting at that if they're not ment for aquarium use,you don't know what kind of controls are used in manufacturing them.I was using the sponge's as an example.I should have been more clear.
