I just want to thank everyone for their knowledge and support! I find this forum is a good way to pass the time during waterchanges so thanks for the entertainment!

I have NO idea how you all can be reading the forum while doing a water change. LOL The whole operation takes about 5 minutes total. While I drain, Im wiping the entire tank down to include all equipment which takes about 3 minutes and filling takes like 2 minutes. LOL

O my tank takes at least 45 min to drain and prob 20 to fill. My 29 goes faster though

Im super confused as to what this "time" is that you are refering to haha. Somethings always moving, drains, fills, container fills, tank wipes, re-feed, its a system and I can do the whole fish room in about an hour and a half tops but every minute Im in the room there is something that needs to be done. Covered and lights converted for attachment, cages put in, equipment bleached, cones pulled, cones moved, lol, I just get as much long term work done as possible in the time it takes to do all the drains fills and wipes.

LOL I have time when I drain my 90g. Like I am now. Take a bit of time even with one inch hose. Then by the time I get there I'm out of aged water and fill from tap. After that I sit and watch my aging barrel as I am really good at over filling. So I sit in the basement listen to tunes and watch water move around.

Theres a wayne transfer pump for everything in my house, with 1" ID suction lines, if I want water gone, it gets gone now. If not I release the pedal on the pump and it just siphons while I wipe. Its all the strength of the hoses and the pumps that move it.... and your ability to multi-task haha

yeah i reckon i do water changes like eddie real fast after time thou my fish got use to it they like sitting in the current well it looks like they like it at least still a link to this video you shall post will be pretty cool see if i can speed things up a bit in my fish room

I sit in my fish room during water changes and watch American Pickers on the tube - use my lap top during drain and fill times of the tanks - Its just a time for me to work with my fish and wind down from the day - enjoy every minute

For us who have idle time during WCs. I suspect we need larger diameter hoses and faster pumps.

Lol interested in that 5 min change also Eddie! What's yours setup to do it? It took about the same time than changing the oil in my car lol , and their always water on the floor:mad:

Dogvet06
10-16-2012, 09:27 AM
yeah prob bigger hose. i was proud of myself for getting it down to a system and getting less water on the floor. but apparently there is more efficiency to improve upon! :)

Thats the way I do it. But I have a decent pump. This takes about 9 minutes so I do actually have a little time to get on the forum after all. LOL

Dogvet06

it def drains a lot faster than mine...i wonder if i hook up a larger hose to my pump if it will help...the diameter of the pump connections is standard hose size so will that slow it down much? i think mine fills just as fast but have more gallons so more down time

Good set up Eddie! wish i could do that big of a wc!! when are you using pump ? drain or filling ?

I tought you were a sage fish keeper of 50 or so , not a 35 yrs old guy with tatoo haha , that's cool!

nwehrman
10-16-2012, 02:35 PM
Good set up Eddie! Guess since I do 10 tanks in an hour - I'm not doing that bad. All draining is gravity right now... Once in fishroom will be even faster! Of course then I'll have more tanks so maybe not!

Now water in is so fast I have to pay attention or there will be water everywhere!

+1 on my fry tank too. With the other tanks I leave the room, read my kindle, watch soccer cook dinner. Obviously I have a slow drain.

Yeah, I wish I could drill my 55s but they are tempered glass so they will shatter. While I was in Okinawa, 55 gallon tanks were all I had available to me so where there there is a will there is a way! LOL

Thanks for the video Eddie. I'm thinking about trying out the 3/4 hose over the 1/2 inch hose for the drain (gravity feed). So gravity feed on the drain and pump on the fill? What size pump? I currently use a Mag drive 9.5 on the fill.

Its a EU type of Eheim. The model is the Compact Plus 3000, rated for 3000 LPH, 65 watt. Not a bad pump and can be used inline, submersed or out of the water.

my question is if i have a larger diameter hose go into my pump that has a smaller diameter (with proper fittings of course) will the pump slow the process or help it? i never was good with physics...
this is similar to my setup but i have a larger gph pump than one shown here http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x39/Charlie_98/Tankrenovation002.jpg

Eddie
10-16-2012, 03:56 PM
Think of it as a bottleneck. All of the water will meet pressure as it approaches the fitting.

Dogvet06
10-16-2012, 03:59 PM
ok guess i will get a larger hose when i move and put tank by a window. for now i will stick to my method and read forum lol

I'm wondering what type of hose you use to attach to the pump? Or do you use PVC? I am having trouble finding something that doesnt compress dramatically with the amount of suction the pump provides. I tried looking up (1" ID suction lines ) but can't seem to find anything relevant.

We have used a washing machine steel mesh hose... Next to the pump. No compression whatsoever

Just go for the one inch hose Pat you'll be glad you did. It really sucks! I use a 900gph pump to fill. It gives me enough time to drain and wipe down all sides on 20g tanks while the other tank fills with a minute or two to spare.

I have seen those and was considering it, however I was worried about a reduced flow rate because of the smaller size?

It's 3/4 same as the fittings on the Wayne pump. Standard water hose size.

Since I'm mid fish room build it is on my water storage tank... Takes minutes to fill my 75. Have to pay attention or I'll have water everywhere... No flow reduction I am aware of - I fill about 200 gallons (multiple tanks) in 10-15 minutes.

Thank you both for your help, sorry OP for hijacking. I usually pass time while tank is draining by sniffing prime ;) (oddly the smell is kind of addictive)
