Well to be honest we have been having a lot of problems with my kid being sick and the wife has been pushing me to get rid of everything right now. As you can see I am holding on up to this point ;)

They are safe up until the point the ray gets large enough to consider discus as food. I never had a problem but my rays that I kept with discus never were bigger then 8" disc. Now my brother kept some 10-12" rays with some of his wild discus and it took them a few months they started attacking the discus and killed several. I feed mine worms, shrimp, scallops, pellet food, and tilapia

Sean, try to hold in there. Your son being sick is surely a temporary condition.

Wow, if Ray eventually will eat discus, I guess Ray will also eat my cory and other small fish. Too bad, I can't get one then :(
Thank you

I hope so but he has been sick 16 times in 11 months and on antibiotics over a dozen times. He is on them now along with breathing treatments 1-6 times a day.

Sean I've been there too, they do get better although I remember those days too and the lack of hope! We used to be weekly at the dr with one or the other of my sickly kids. I was blessed with two...by the time they were one I think we had five specialists for each. But.. My oldest is almost 5 and my youngest is 3 is now the only one that still sees a specialist regularly because of his asthma. We have outgrown the need of all the others!

Sounds like my life :(

We had to buy a breathing machine Monday because they think our guy is starting to have asthma problems also. Plus he had pneumonia two weeks ago and now has pneumitis whatever the heck that is.

Beautiful Rays! Im sorry about your son, I wish him well. My husband and I had a blue spot ray in our SW FOWLR tank and unfortunately the live rock was a cause of death. We loved that ray and he got trapped behind the rocks and died. We were devastated and tore down the tank. Its been sitting empty in our living room for 6 months but now I have converted the tank over to my Discus tank. They are just as wonderful for me to watch but I know my husband would rather have the ray :( Here was "Dyson"

Sean,

In order for rays to do well in an aquarium, doesn't the tank have to be at least 6' or longer? Also, what are the sizes of yours rays and how many do you keep per tank?

Sean,

I read a ray book my brother has and it says a good starter tank for small juvie rays is a 90 gallon tank. Mine are all around 4"-7" right now I just have them in a 180 because that was what I had to put them in which is way bigger then they need right now. But to really answer your question it really depends on who you ask. Just like on here you will get 20 different answers I can just tell you what I have done and worked for me. I started off keeping two hystrix rays in a 90 with no problems at all didn't move them to a bigger tank until they reached 6". Rays produce more waste them discus so it is nice to have good filtration. My brother has four 10" rays in a 200 running on two canister filter but he has that setup on a drip system as well. IMO if they ray has room to swim around then he has plenty of room most ray people I know say when there nose and tail stretch out and touch front and back of the tank it is time to upgrade.

Coffee please - black and strong in pint mugs, for best results at least 6 a day.

I just got a retic pup yesterday, my wife got it for me as a Bday gift from the local fish store. I have not been able to get him to eat yet but man is he awesome!!!! He looks just like Josies only about 3" across. I REALLY REALLY want a Leo ray......I just can not bring my self to spend 700.00 on a sting ray. I will see if I can post a picture tomorrow of the new guy.

Any suggestions on how to get him to eat?

Have you tried live blackworms?

Just like what was said in the previous post best to use is live blackworms. If that isn't a option I go to walmart or a fishing store and buy some earthworms use for fishing. I go to walmart and buy the smallest worms they sell. If your ray is only 3" he is very young may take a day or two until it starts eating. If you buy fishing worms cut them up into small pieces then once he gets to eating better start him on cut up shrimp, cut up scallops, small pieces of tallopia.

I tried the cut up worms last night. He paid no attention to them and swam over them without even trying to eat. It did however look as though he ate a few blood worms that had made their way to the bottom from feeding the discus.
The discus were bumping him with their nose to move him away from the food. I then added a divider to keep the discus out and allow me to keep track of what the ray is eating vs the discus.
Try again tonight.......

The last little ray I got it took him 2-3 days for he really settled in and started eating. I forgot about bloodworms mine will eat those also.

Just as Jeff said YES I recently well last year added a ray without QT and almost lost two of my rays because of it. Always QT anything no matter what
