Could someone please tell me the usual time it takes to attach to the parents from when they become free swimming?

No more than 48 hours, mine all usually attach between 24 and 36 hours.

Mine became free swimming 12 hours ago and so far all are huddled in a corner with the parents looking on.:whip:

Parents might have moved them.Give them a little more time. When mine are free swimming, theres no huddling together, quite the opposite.

But are they swimming about now up in the corner or stuck in the corner?

if they are swimming and the parents have them all huddled in the corner, this is a good sign and the parents are doing thier job.......don't monkey with them.

They just swimming in the corner with parents close by, some come near the parents but then swim off again by the way the parents are pidgeon bloods.

Does it appear as if the parents are corraling them into the corner?

Try changing the lighting. If an aquarium light is on, turn it off. If the light is off, turn it on.

you can also try lowing the water to half for a few minutes. I had this happen this past weekend. The fries were just swimming all over the tank or around the cone. While doing a 50% water change, the fries attached.

I would just leave them alone, perhaps dim the lights in the corner where they are at by placing a piece of cardboard under 1/2 of the light itself.

I have no lights on the tank just the room light thats on in the fish room. Its 36 hours now and apart from a couple attaching briefly then swimming off they still coralled in the corner so i've started to offer them food micro worms.

If you would like to see some instruction on pigeon attachment you can check out the video's in my homestead under "SS Pigeon, Babies, Tank 7" Thats a solid pigeon pair, they raise they young incredibly well but I talk a bit about how I do attachment for my pigeon's... Which is most of what I do. I prefer using a piece of cardboard to cover most of light generally, but then I also change the outside of the tank and increase the light to almost entirely on. Simple and easy to change it to suit the needs of the pair and the new babies.

Hi troweler, I have a Super Red checkerboard pair that spawned and went free swimming on Sunday with the same sort of problem. 1st spawn for the pair, they had the young herded up in a corner. one or two would break off and pick at them from time to time but no firm attachment. The parents have gone a little darker than usual but not a lot. after 2 and a half days i thought they were most likely not going to live so i decided to try something I read somewhere. the are in a tank with white back, sides and bottom. I lowered the water to about8 inches deep and covered the front of the tank with white paper and put a 15 watt light in front of the tank about 2 foot away. Left it on and the next day they were all attached and have been since. I believe it creates a dark silhouette of them and attracts the young. Who knows but is has worked. The paper is now off the tank and they are getting used to normal lights as well. Try it if you think it may work76261

Have tried taking out the sponge filter and lowering the water level to 8 ins, but the problem is i get an ammonia spike when i do this which kills the fry :(

Try covering the filter with white pantyhose instead of removing it. Can also try using the blue led moonlights instead of regular lights; Ive had that work for quite a few times.

thanx will try that, What about lowering the water or shall i not bother with that?

I work a lot with pigeons. I do not find lowering the water level to be critical or even necessary. I never change the water level and have very going attachment rates. White out the sponge filter, I use panty hose as listed above. I hate cheese clothe but you can do that too .

Gonna try wrapping some filter wool around it

I use cheap white women's knee highs. Drop in the sponge filter, a quick twist on the top to coil up the excess, toss a rubber band around it, stick it back in the tank. I was cleaning it daily.
