I am relatively new. I have successfully kept four discus for two months in my 75 planted tank.

The first week I had the fish, my large blue turquoise (he is 4.5 inches and the others are 3 or 3.5) looked at me and snapped his jaws so hard I could hear it from three feet away. He (or she) did this for a good 4 or 5 seconds. Fortunately or unfortunately I have not seen the behavior since.

Has this happened to any one else?

You can hear mine every time I stick their food to the glass. It sounds like those old clicking toys I had when I was a kid.

Whenever they're eating pellets off the surface they make that clicking noise for me.

I've seen/heard them pop their jaws before......no idea why. Its very loud and much easier to hear then them just eating off the top.

Yeah, as others have mentioned, I get the clicking noise when they're grabbing the food from the surface. They'll splash water from time to time as well (no top on the tank). Yesterday, they splashed water on my desk, which is a good 3 ft away. I think it's time to get a top for the tank :)
