Pair 1 have a mass of wigglers now and have been moving them to a new are as the eggs continue to hatch.

I'd like to show the swarm of wigglers but I'm trying not to hover around them too much. There are many eggs that didn't hatch, but the number of did is still massive. I didn't expect she could lay as many as she did this time.

Well the fry are swimming on the parents backs now. It doesn't look like it was a very large number that did attach, but I'll know for sure a little later. It's too difficult to see this time of day with the sun coming into the room and glaring on the glass. Either way, it's progress so maybe future spawns will go smoother. I won't take any pictures or video just yet but after they are settled in for a day or so I'll see if I can't get something to post :)

Second Hand Pat

It generally takes a day for the Tefe's. I have read on the forum that domestics can take longer. Honestly I do not have enough experience to say anything useful. I have been told by my wilds mentors attachment takes between 1 to 4 hours.

I have to admit that it's a truly amazing site. I'm thankful I finally get to see it, but may not have if it weren't for all of the help I received from some really gracious people. I've had a million and one questions for Pat, Mark Chen, Dale Jordan plus others and they've all answered them for me and given me different things to try until it finally worked out. Well the parents attitude has changed toward me in the past few days, and when I am near they go behind the piece of wood the spawn on with all of the babies so I really can't see what they are doing. Once I leave the room, I can look around the corner minutes later and they're back out. Odd how they wouldn't flinch before when I was at the front of the tank and now seem to hide, but whatever makes them happy at this point is all good.

Len

Len
10-23-2012, 08:12 PM

Len

Congrats Len ! - Those wilds & attached fry look great !

Kinda re-kindles my interest in discus spawning & raising fry.

Haven't had discus spawn in one of my tanks for many years (since my years of living in Singapore way back when), because I've kept nothing but planted discus community tanks since then - raised juvies and then always sold them off when they got to around 5" - cause I didn't want to be bothered with raising the fry.

However, this past week 'out of the blue', so to speak, I had a pair of Blue Diamonds spawn on the face of a UV sterilizer, and 2 or 3 days later, a pair of Snakeskins spawned on a filter intake tube. Looked like 60-80 eggs in both cases.

First time for both pairs, and of course the eggs disappeared within hours, with both set of parents making short work of them.
After following your thread however, and giving thought to how many times it took your pairs to 'get it right', I'm now interested in following matters a little more closely, and who knows, I might even decide to isolate one of the pairs in another tank to see how things go.

Your thread, Len, has served to re-inspire me. And like Keith, you & Pat have got me thinking real hard about getting some wilds ! I've never kept them.

At any rate, good luck to you with those youngsters.

Len
10-23-2012, 09:04 PM
I'm glad you've been inspired again :) I think if you went with wilds you would enjoy them, but that's just my opinion. Either way good luck getting some spawns going.

Hi Mauro,

It would be nice to see your fish spawn. I like them very much. I saw the advice Mark Chen gave you a short while ago and it was basically the same thing that got mine to start spawning. Raise temp, lower hardness (drastically) let ph fall below 6 and stop water changes for a short period of a week or so. Then a massive water change with cooler water and drop the temp on the heater to 78. They started spawning almost right away and haven't stopped since. I was getting extremely frustrated, but then once I got some fry attached to the parents, it was worth it, so good luck and keep trying. When it finally works, you'll be glad you did.

Thank you for the advice. I should try this method in a more consistent way, but the problem is that I travel a lot. I have been travelling for the last 10 days and I will be back home only on Monday. But after that I will be able to dedicate more time to the fish and hopefully it will work.

Yeah, well talk some sense into Pat and get her to send her greens up to me and then she can focus on her other discus and get them spawning. If you work it from the angle "Pat It's for your own best interest ..." She might listen, but as of yet, she's not seeing it when I tell her. The little ones are eating like crazy. Besides the bbs, they are eating freeze dried blackworms (minced), cyclop-eeze, crushed flake and some shaved frozen beefheart (organically raised on local farm). They don't get a lot of beefheart because it clouds the water so easily, but what they do get has pro-more and nori powder added :)

These guys are eating like crazy still. I've been mixing it up a bit to make sure they don't get to fixed on a certain diet. So far the only thing they've turned their noses up at were the krill pellets I tried them on. They drew a line in the sand with those and refused. They do eat Beefheart flake with Pro Growth, Spirulina flake, Hi Pro Growth Flake, Triple Growth Flake, NLS pellets (the only fish I've ever had eat them), Ocean Nutrition pellets, Earth worm sticks with Garlic, Frozen Beefheart mix with pro growth (sparingly) and of course as you can see FDBW. They also get at least 4 complete water changes per day, sometimes more. I hope to cut back on those again once I get them moved out of the 20 Gal into something larger since they are quickly outgrowing it.

Went to upload this last night and realized the new laptop I'm testing doesn't have a slot for the card from my camera:(

They are getting big Len, how long are they now? They look wonderful and uniform.

Updates soon to come. The remainder of this batch after an unexpected water disaster are all in a 60 Gal and are starting to show some colouration. I did lose about half of the batch within 2 hours of a water change, so just shy of 30 left :( Hopefully I can get a decent video later this evening.

Hey Len. How are you Discus fry doing? Do you have anymore updates?

I don't have them any longer. After some drastic water problems with the local water supply a little while back the fry had some real setbacks. I lost about half of them in one day. After that I lost a few here and there and although some reached about 3.5 inches or so, they didn't seem to be doing that great so I ended up culling the whole lot to start fresh. Since then I get spawns, but one a few hatched and were too small to put that much effort into if the parents didn't eat them. Most times though they lay and then eat the eggs two days later.
