My city tap water has a TDS of 571. Once it get RO it lowers to 140. Is it time for a new RO membrane? Will a new membrane lower the TDS?

Or is 140 ok for breeding?

Thought it should be between 70 - 100.
I have been experiencing fertilization issues.

somethings wrong with your membrane or you need a water softener installed....Josie

Is it a new unit? TDS should be lower than 140... For pure RO water. Mine is 330 into RO unit and 20 out of RO unit. I have a separate DI unit that makes it 0 for my reef tank.

Have you flushed the membrane recently?

The RO unit is about three years old. The membrane is 15 months old. I have not "flushed" the membrane. I am a little embarrassed but have no idea how to flush it or what that means.

I bought a new membrane tonight. I'm sure it will fix the issue.

Lol... I didn't have a clue at one time either. I bought a flush to add to my unit, some say they are not needed. But my unit works much better if I use it every four months or so... I usually do it when I change filters. Basically it bypasses the flow restrictor so flow increases thru the membrane flushing off large particles...I run it for a few minutes, just after changing filters.

If you change your filters and membrane, your TDS should get you below 50. If you have a DI attached, the DI resin will need to be changed as well.

Where do you live that your TDS is over 500?

How many gallons per day is your unit?

Also, do you run it everyday? If not, the membrane can clog faster. A flush valve is about $10.00. Ken's supply should have one. After a good couple days of running, you bypass the good water by turning the valve closed and it will flush the membrane to your waste water line.
