So, I just got a used canister filter, not very old. Definitely clean to the eye, no hard water crusting, no visible gunk runs very well....
The setup I got it from had a couple of big cichlids and a pleco.
I was thinking of running the filter without any media using a bleach solution and then run it with clean water 4-5 times. And then do the same thing with PP just to be safe. How long should I run the filter in bleach and PP?

You only need to use one of those - bleech is better and less messy. A few minutes should do it. Rinse it well and let it dry.

+1 On the bleach. just make sure to add an extra measure of de-chlore as you put it into service.

I recently put my old Eheim canister back in service that was used on a saltwater tank. I just cleaned it really well with soap and water then a bleach/water bath for an hour then rinsed really well then another water soak treated with prime. No issues at all.
