If you can find a bag of the plastic shavings those IMO work the best. Provide lots of surface area.

Any type of sintered glass like siporax...

Depends on what your priorities are, i.e. what you want best to achieve.
The above suggestions are great for maintaining good bio-filtration.
If you want above average water clarity, particularly in a planted discus tank, I suggest Seachem Purigen, and filter floss (the latter changed frequently to prevent reduced water flow, or even clogging.)

I like ceramic rings with a lot of prefiltering too.
What do you all think about activated carbon? and Nitrate remover (reducing) media in the canister?

No need for any of it if you are changing water frequently.
