Changing one's stripes...

I noticed that on pictures of very young discus that a lot of them have a very disctinct black stripe down their cheek, through their eye (among other stripes.) As they get older, they don't seem to have this stripe, or at least it is not as evident unless the fish is stressed in some way. At what age does it beging to fade and only show up when stressed?

I did a search, but either I searched the wrong terms or there isn't anything recent that came up.

The mood bars seem less on fish over 3 to 4 inches as they start coloring up .
