If you do not have a pre filter or are skeptical about them this is what I squeezed out of mine after two days. This was a bucket of clear tap water.

If that doesn't convince you I don't know what will!

yuck. I always use a pre-filter sponge on the overflows before it enters the sump. and I squeeze out a mess out of mine too every time I do a water change. I found it filters out the fine food particles the fish, especially the adults, don't bother with. I sure con't want that garbage going in the sump. Yuck

Did you drop your coffee in the bucket? Prefilters are of great help, I rinse mine everyday but they are never that bad mostly it is very fine food particles.

yeap ... the most important piece in the filtering chain in my opinion. I swap it out with a clean piece every other day for my wet/dry and hose off the dirty one. It just looks/smells bad.

Lol it looked like ice tea going into the utility sink.

I have a large bioload in my tank. I clean the sponges every 1-2 days and mine usually have way more crap than that in them! I also have plants that contribute some to the refuse. If I do not clean my sponges that often the flow rate thru the filters noticably decreases. I have AQ filters and you can see less water going thru them.

On this topic one of my filters looks like this 76816if I use a prefilter sponge should I just remove the this, and put a sponge over the tube, or leave this on and cut a sponge large enough to fit over it?

You can take the screen tube off and put the sponge on the tube. But I prefer to have the sponge go ove the screen for more water flow.

Or if you have a sponge filter laying around that fits the tube for the intake you can so this:

Brandon, im trying to understand your photo. Is that an entire sponge filter, with the tube connected to the intake. If so, do you still have air tubing connected to it? If so, do you have an air power source and a power hob BOTH supplying power to it?

Anyone have a recommendation of a sponge to use on a FX5? Any problems with early motor burnout from reduced flow?

Yes that's a whole sponge filter. There is no air hook up to it. It's just plumbed directly onto the intake to the canister filter. It didn't fit to start off with so I had to modify it a little but it works like a charm now!

COOL.......how do you supply air to the aquarium?

I have a central air pump I use to get air to my aquariums. Usually 1 or two sponges and an air stone

Heck, I've seen Les Stroud (Survivorm Man) drink way worse stuff than that! LOL

I use only one airstone with air pump attached to it but in that pic I had airstone spray bar

I don't see a need for HOB filters in a discus tank where daily wc and cleaning happens.
I just have matten filters in all my tanks powered by a central air pump.

My hob isn't on a discus tank, I don't have discus yet I was just curious about prefilters on the type of hob I have.
