In the picture at the top left. I use a sponge from an aquaclear filter on the intake. just punch a hole in it and slip over the intake. Clean this prefilter with every water change and clean the internal filters as you did before.

thanks for replying and ya i got Ehfisubstrat Pro - 1 L with my eheim 2217 my question is as i am feeding BHM to my discus so my 2217 will suck some small bhm so will it be right to clean the filter after a month as previous in my 2215 i had all blue sponge which i use to clean in month. so now i have this bio media, will it make any difference.

If you put a sponge on the intake tube to your filter the small bits will not get inside your filter.
http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?27064-Prefilter-Sponge/page15 thread #217 shows a premade for Eheim

Will it choke the filter

No, it slows the flow a little. I clean it with every water change. I use the sponge that comes in aquaclear 70 and use a pair of scissors to poke a hole half way through and wide enough to slip over the intake. Easy to pull off and clean and the fish help by picking food off of it also.:)

If you have a sponge filter you can do something like this

It's a sponge filter I attached to my canister filter. They can also be hooked up to most filters with round intakes of similar size to the tube one the sponge.

You might try cleaning the sponges daily instead of with every water change.

I have been running a prefilter on a hot magnum and a bunch of aquaclears with no problem for years. Just keep it clean.
