I'm reasonably inept at geek speak, so I don't know how to put up a poll type post here on Simply. I'm starting this for curiosity's sake..
Fish breeders, particularly those who raise up, pair up, and spawn fish to any large degree, what is your method of culling?

1)..I prefer and use the floor exclusively. Carcasses go to the trash can, with the exception of some summer gardening..

I throw them to my dachshunds....they love to eat fish. Nothing more natural than one animal eating another.

I have a bucket that gets old bbs water, plant trimmings, ect, anything wet and bio-degradeable. So call it a cull bucket.

For culling fry I just suck them out with my Wayne pump to the front yard. I never hear the pump gurgle so I'm unsure of what happens to them other then they fertslize my lawn. I'm not a heartless person and don't try to torture fish but I'm also not going to treat them like I would a mammal or other animal that has a super sensitive nervous system.

I throw them down hard on the concrete floor. Sad, but very very quick. never even see them squirm. Instant I think

If the fry are small, they go into my SA chiclid tank. Large fish go in the freezer.

Mine go into a Plastic bag and then that meets the floor. Instant kill!

sometimes floor, thus my jack russel gets a treat. If over 20 then the freezer due to the fact that I do not have a dachshund. Everything really is bigger in TX... JON. I Did drop a net full of 2 inchers into a bucket of cholox back in 1988. I was stunned at how high they can jump. Smelly fish all over the floor. Too much work to clean up.

I like the grab-bag method and in the freezer till garbage day.
Have done the toilet funeral flush as recommended by my 10 yr old daughter a couple of times.

I use to decapitate with a fillet knife, but lately the concrete floor has been the only thing I've used.

Ed, what happened to that 2 foot catfish you had lurking in the sump tank?

It depends on my mood, sometimes ice water, some times straight to trash can....

seems like the floor is winning as of now. It is probably the cheapest and easiest way.

I prefer the floor method ,but I can only do it when the wife or my mother in law is not around. When they are I use clove oil and vodka that does the trick.

I'll throw the culls into another tank just to make sure I have a cycle tank, after that they go into the Oscar tank.

Large catfish was the kewlest, the bio load was not worth the reward though.

Catch in net, fast hard whack against the side of the tub, down the toilet/in the trash/buried (depending on size).

I'm just waiting for someone to get on here and offer to take all of your culls haha

Regardless of how you cull, how do you determine culls from keepers when they're small enough to not be able to see their true shape or color? With my poor old eyes, I could barely see that they're fish at 2"... never mind whether they'r GOOD fish.... lol

I cull for shape and structural/ genetic issues, possibly health, but seldom if ever for 'color'...Discus are round when they are size of a lentil, or they are not, and other than a few wild strains, round is the accepted standard...Good breeders see to it that all those deformity/ growth issues don't make it down the pipeline to the citizenry...By two inch we should all be down to acceptable fish...

I cull for fins first, then as they get a little bigger gills, eyes and shape, after that just depends on each fish (color, pattern, etc).

Usually they are small enough to be moved to the "1.5 gallon porcelain tank", if they are too big for that I freeze till trash day.
