Hey Guys and Gals,

Was just pondering on buying a small generator incase of a power outage, They may be rare around here and short lived but if for some reason 1 hits and lasts over a day the discus tank could be decimated?

I was looking at the battery power back ups but they only last about 10-20 minutes I hear?

Was looking at this generator to run the tank.

Champion 1500W Gas Generator

Goes on sale for about $190.

You guys think this a wise investment to be prepared for a freak power outage?

Thanks Alot!

I think it's a great investment..any active prevention helps..My fishroom is heated by gas, so not affected by outages..I have 2 gensets; one for the house's furnace ignition and a few lights, and one for the fishroom to keep all the air driven filtration running....

Another option if you only have a single tank or two and don't need it run anything heavy is an inverter.. Runs off your car battery, takes up no room. Its actually a good thing to have anyway...I use mine for all kinds of things.

Is the Champion 1500w Generator fine to run a 125 gallon tank (Eheim Pro 3 2075 filter, Heater, and Air Pump) might add the lighting if it can take it as well?

For the Inverter I just buy the Inverter and a cheap car battery?

I also own a few inverters, from 400 to 2000w, but they don't last long before you're below 'safe battery level'..how to recharge after a big drain or a two week outage??..a generator!....

Gary,

also own a few inverters, from 400 to 2000w, but they don't last long before you're below 'safe battery level'..how to recharge after a big drain or a two week outage??..a generator!....

I run my inverter off my car battery.. Leave the battery in the car run an extension cord or two into the house..., and turn on the car... My inverters have saved my butt out here many times for days at a time in the Northeast. As long as I have gas in the car...good to go.Definetly, Not saying better than a generator, thats a given, ...but for some hobbyists its a good alternative, and a less expensive one that shouldn't be overlooked IMO. Sure beats a battery operated airpump!

You can get them all over the place...http://www.harborfreight.com/catalogsearch/result?q=inverter%27

Figure out the wattage your tank uses before you buy one.

I have a 5500 watt generator I got last summer at a yard sale for $60. It's almost new. Before then, I had a 1200 watt inverter which I hooked up to the battery in the car. I ran the car as long as I needed the inverter - once for two days straight.

During Storm Sandy i ran my 8000KW generator for 7 days, including 8 heater, lights, medo pump and home basics, frig, lights and furnace.
if it wasn't for the generator my fish would not have made it through the storm.

Im still debating on how many watts ill need in the generator to just run the aquarium

Would be running about a 300w heater a eheim canister (pulls 16w) lighting system (not sure how much that draws to be honest) and an air pump

Which of these generators is best to run the aquarium, nothing else will be attached to the generator.
