DISEASE QUESTIONNAIRE

Problem

1. Please explain the problems with your fish/when and how they started

Fish are losing weight, getting fairly skinny. Just not looking right.

2. Symptoms (i.e. turning dark, excess slime, not eating, clamped fins, flashing, darting, clamped gills, white/yellow/green poop, hiding, headstanding or tailstanding, white on tips of fins, rotting or fungus, blisters/ white zits on fish, bloated, cloudy eyes, wounds)

Color seems to be ok, not amazing but not dark. Fish are still flaring at each other and acting normal. All show good appetites. One doesn't seem to always hold the food down, the others do fine just won't gain weight.

3. What medications/ treatments that you have already tried and results. Include dosages and duration of treatment.

Done one full treatment of Prazi tablets, and one treatment with Vermisol. Prazi was recommended dosage on the package, I don't remember. Vermisol was 1/2 teaspoon per 20gal (40gal QT tank). Neither showed any worms dropping or on the bottom of the tank.

Tank/Water

4. Tank size and age, number and size of fish

Were in my 100gal with other healthy fish. Now in a 40gal QT with 2 others.

5. Water change regime/ how long has tank been running/ bare bottom or gravel/ do you age your water?

Daily water changes, bare bottom. No water aging.

6 Parameters and water source;

- temp __84___

- ph __7.2___

- ammonia reading ____

- nitrite reading ____

- nitrate reading ____

- well water ____

- municipal water ____

7. Any new fish/plants added recently

Nope

I hate even coming to this section. But I have to if I want to save these fish. Got 2 on the real skinny side, one headed that way. They aren't dark, still have color, no clamped fins, still picking at each other like usual, shows some appitite but not going crazy for food....one spits it back out sometimes. Like said above I tried Prazi tablets and Vermisol.....nothing seems to be dropping from them. Unfortunently I don't have a microscope yet to check feces but the poo is dark and looks normal to the human eye. Been trying to feed them some worming flake, but they don't take to it very well. Daily water changes and fish in the same tank couldn't be healthier. I suspect worms which is why I started with Prazi and Vermisol....where should I go next? Keep hitting them with wormers? I didn't include my water readings because I don't believe they are a factor and frankly I don't know.

How many other fish where in the main tank? Were they the same size to start? Reason I ask is, it sounds like normal suppresion by the other fish.

Had abut 10-12 in the 100gal to start. Just not so sure. The current king of the tank only took over power once these started to get thin. All were/are same size.

Sorry to hear Matt. What are you feeding them? As far as worming, the normal routine for nematodes or roundworms calls for a follow up to get any eggs that may have gone past the first treatment.

Try a dose of fluben from Kusuri in the UK..they're pretty fast..

Feeding FDBW, Tetra Color bits, and some beefheart flake here and there. At least twice a day feedings. Would the first treatment for worms make them expel them after the worms die? I just haven't seen anything like that and thats whats made me scratch my head and question what I should be medicating for. Think I should do a treatment of Metro and then do the followup worming after that?

I can try to get some pictures, but they aren't in the easiest tank to photograph so no promises there.

My thoughts on that still go to preferring the Kusuri Plus, as it gets other parasites as an all in one, usually one time treatment...As for Metro, I've switched to Dimetryl+, but that's an entirely different tack...worms are usually disspelled if heavy, but some just dissolve to waste..

Matt, capillaria are not visible with the eye. They can only be verified via microscope. Also, a follow up treatment is required.

For intestinal nematode infections of ornamental fish, several anthelminthics (dewormers) are available. Two effective and commonly used dewormers are fenbendazole and levamisole. Fenbendazole can only be used as a feed additive at the rate of 1.14 grams per pound of food fed for three days, with a repeat treatment in two to three weeks. Levamisole can be used both in the feed and as a bath treatment. One effective oral dose is 1.8 grams of levamisole per pound of food fed once a week for three weeks. One effective bath treatment dose is 2 ppm (mg/liter) levamisole for 24 hours, with a repeat treatment in two to three weeks. However, be sure to consult with a fish health specialist before commencing any treatment and always follow their recommendations.

I'm in the process of getting a microscope. Trick is getting fresh poo from these fish. Honestly I'm nervous that the don't have 2 to 3 weeks left in them. They are getting dangerously thin. Going to have to observe the fish and see if more treatment is worth it, I haven't seen any improvements after using prazi or vermisol the first times.

Do the fish eat flake/pellet pretty well. Might go for some deworming flake from AngelsPlus or some dewormer bits from Rocky Mountain Discus. Haven't used the bits for at least a decade but if your fish are eating pellets, its worth a shot.
