Go Pat go, such a nice collection. Mine hasn't turned out as nice. I need to be more devoted going forward, got a little lax with my collection and its shown. Tank problems, pH crashes, having to leave multiple times a month, user error.....I'm locked in now. Ready to see what this wild season offers.

Awesome looking Cuipeua Pat. You done yourself proud as they are beautiful.

I hope your breeding program will be successful.

Is it me or my imagination but do I see a thick center bar on a couple? Is there Heckel blood running through them at some point in the spawning cycle of the Cuipeua?

Matt, take good care of those Cuipeua based fish. If I recall correctly collection of Cuipeua has not been approved for this year (Mark, correct me if wrong). I did the same early in the year with this group with not keeping up with WCs when the Tefe were breeding like mad. Me bad but like you fully engaged now.

Thanks Jeff, yes most of the solid based ones have a centerbar, some thicker then others. I have no clue about being heckel based or not. Perhaps Mark or others may know.

As far as I know, the 5th bar in some of the alenquer region reds has been a normal trait - especially in the Ica region, thus sometimes called the Ica type. There has never been an heckel found in the alenquer region according to Bleher but who knows what happens during flood season.

Pat, If i remember correctly Hudson said that Cuipea was not closed, but i could also misread it.

Lago Cuipeua is still closed by IBAMA according to my latest update from Brazilian suppliers, anyone posting Cuipeua for sale currently is either labelling Alenquer region fish incorrectly to sell for a premium or were collected last season. Hudson is not the only one allowed to fish for discus in Brazil ;)

Nice Pat, they are definitely considering it :) Nice black tails, and I especially note the one on the far left showing the back 4 bars more prominently. I'd be curious to know if they turn their bars white when defending their chosen territory against intruders. Mine do that, but I don't know if it's just a quirk with them or if it's normal behaviour.

These guys have been settling very nicely into this tank over a week now even to the point of having some pre-spawning behavior. The upper most fish left side is the suspected female and look how red that eye is. In person that is one red hot eye.

I have read a great article considering stres in discus aquarium in diskus brief. In it author Roland Fischer (biologist and discus breeder) diveded natural history of wild discus in different stages depending on the age of the discus and season. Your tank mimics the breeding stage, when wild discus pairs move from colony lifestyle in wooded sores to the breeding groups in the flooded forest. Your setup mimics this habitat in that your tank is large, preattty high, roots are positioned so, that they mark breeding territories of the flooded forest and last but not least, small stock mimics group lifestyle. Nandi/Kiska uses the same strategy with his tank. I wiill write more about this naother day.

Thanks Mauro, I do not. You think I should add one? The Tefe's never did use one so I removed it.

My first Cuipeua pair lay eggs only in the breeding cone. The second pair laid two batches of eggs in the driftwook, but then concentrated in the other cone. So I guess it helps.

Second Hand Pat
12-20-2012, 08:58 AM
Thanks Mauro, they were cleaning wood last night at bed time. The male seems uncommitted and the female was shimmying like crazy.

Second Hand Pat
12-21-2012, 10:30 PM
So seeing an uncommitted male is odd to me so I went back and reviewed Mark (Discus Origins) Cuipeua spawn February of this year and sure enough Mark had the same observation.

http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?94307-Cuipeua-Spawn-2-15-12&highlight=Cuipeua

So I consulted a fellow wilds keeper and mentioned this situation with the Cuipeua and he suggested adding more fish or a bossy male. Point is to create a little conflict to have the male of the pair defend his site and cement the pair. He also suggested allowing the pair to have their first spawn in a busy environment before moving them to their own tank. So I am considering adding the Cuipeua F1s as the one little royal is quite pushy.

Second Hand Pat
12-23-2012, 07:49 PM
An interesting development. The suspected male is actually shimmying with a different suspect female. Actually they are shimmying with each other and pushing other fish away. Nothing like a little Christmas love. Should be able to get a video up later.

I pulled the current spawn of fry from the 230 to their own fry tank and removed the divider. A few interesting observations is the separation of the two males seems to have turned on the non-breeding male. He is lip locking with the breeding male and defending his "now" corner of the tank. Will he pair up??...time will tell.

Also the pair is cleaning a spot on the wood.

Bingo, round two. This time I am ready :)

Very nice would say over 200. Love the wilds got 6 Alnquer Reds last week not 100% sure on their back ground but they look like a nice base to work with hopefully. You lucky over their to have close access to such great Discus.

Hi Timmy, the spawn I pulled out only numbered 18. My fault for not sealing the divider tight enough. That spawn is documented here if you want to take a read through. Congrats on your group of Alenquer reds.

As some of you may know I have a batch of seven week fry from the Cuipeua pair. The fry are in their own tank. When prepping the fry to be moving I did my WCs in all tap water (vs a tap/RO mix) to bring the TDS to near tap TDS. I was hoping to turn the pair off from more breeding. Nope, didn't work. The pair laid again yesterday sometime. So yes, wilds will breed in tap water

Nope, wrong conclusion. The correct one is: wilds will breed under Patīs care no matter the water parameters :)

Thanks guys but will the eggs hatch? GH is about 161 ppm.

LOL! May be so...

Pat,

All depends on WHAT makes up your GH. Certain minerals seems to have a negative impact on spawns, calcium being one of them. Curious what your water report says about the mount of calcite, gypsum and magnesium is in your water. :)

Chad, I am on a well so would have to have the testing done. I can only tell you it tested as "potable" 10 years ago when we moved into the house. I can tell you that I do not have iron as I tested that about two years ago.

I didn't know you were on a well.... Yeah, probably not worth investing a bunch of testing in to be honest. It has to be potable if wild discus spawn in it. LOL! :D

and since I drink it, it better be potable. LOL

So we had a small hatch yesterday with about a dozen white eggs. Usually get four to six white eggs so this is a bit higher. I do not see many wigglers so suspecting a lower hatch rate also.

What a cool little "experiment", huh Pat? I mean, you didn't set out to see if they could breed in your tap water, but by golly, you're learning new stuff that will help the rest of us who want to breed....breed fish that is.

I think so Toni and curious to see how far they get. I expect attachment and then the parents eating the fry from the stress of defending them from the rest of the wilds.

As you might know I have my whole house on my tap or well water and the Cuipeua pair tried to spawn in it about three times and finally quit. Everytime I do a WC the pair go to their spawning spot and stare at the wood for a day or so. This weekend I am returning to my RO/tap mix and I bet the Cuipeua pair resume breeding.

The spawn I pulled from this pair in March is doing very well and many in the spawn are three inches or so.

Great, Pat. Keep us posted. We love to see your Cuipeuas in action.

My Cuipeua pair, the only fish left in my 80g, spawned again yesterday. The last two spawn did not go anywhere becasue, I assume, there were other fish in the tank. The fry might attach this time, will see...

Thank you. So, are you switching back to RO/tap mix because you want to raise another batch of Cuipeua fry?

Not really. I just think the wild fish are happier in softer water and I did want to prep the tefes for spawning.
