Back a couple months ago I bid off some discus from joe on aquabid for my very first timer.
I got 3 for $30 shipped plus 1 in case of DOA, so pretty much I pay $5 per fish with $10 shipping.
Out of the 4, 3 Has been growing fine. I QT them for 2 week before I move them into a 40B plant tank.
Bad idea? I should of grow them out in a BB tank huh. The smaller one seen to be doing fine but doesn't show much grow, the color seem to already kicking in(showing). I feel the one he gave just in case of DOA was one of his CULL. I have a 75g waiting to be set up soon so will be moving them into the 75 soon.

They do look a little stunted . The black substrate you're using is causing your pigeon bloods to pepper. I might consider, if you're thinking a out keeping this strain, to switch to a lighter substrate.

They don't look too bad. Feed them well and they'll grow out just fine.

Are they super high quality discus? Nope. Look like what happens when someone crosses a non-pb to a pb. Did you make a bad deal? Nope. For that price you did great. You may have gotten more than you paid for. Also on the 4th discus....you will almost always have a cull. It is because somebody has to be the low man on the totem pole. Even if all 4 were great when they left his place you will end up with one like that. The best way to prevent it is to buy more fish. The larger the group the better. When I am getting new stock I like to buy at least 10.

For $5, I'm impressed.

They don't look stunted to me
