Lots of room for improvements on these pictures but some early promising looking results.
These are the F1 Tefes showing the developing spots...

The pictures in the first post have a defuser on the speedlite. These pictures did not and are a bit harsh.

This picture shows the suspected male of the forming pair pushing the other suspected male. Note the darker tail.

I was told those red spots are normal on Tefes. That is why I bought Alequers ans Santarems from Hans, no Tefes.

Elliot, these are the juvies of wild green Tefe where spots are highly prized in the wild fish.

Wow Pat those Tefe's are going to be gorgeous . I can't wait to see them all grown up.. The Cuipuea's are looking great. The darker back ground really brings out the colour in them. Keep up the good work .

Dave, there are only two that are highly spotted but feel lucky to have the two. Only the mom had a couple of spots.

I just saw this Pat. That last one would be killer with a diffuser on it. Lots of promise though like you said. Can you dial the speedlite back some? I usually have mine set to 1/2 or 1/4 power, depends on the tank or time of day I am shooting and what not.

Matt, so the Comp is the power applied to the flash. I should be able to dial it back. It is at +1.0 or full power I bet.

Too harsh. I forgot I can dial down the light intensity.

Me too Mauro.
I like the pics without the diffuser. Pat, is the speedlight attached to the camera or remote?
Second Hand Pat

Remote Joe, sitting on top of the tank pointing down.
Thanks. That's what I thought.

Definitely a lot of potential. Suggest setting EV to around -0.5 or -1.0. Darker pictures look nicer IMO.
Is that how it looks Joe?
It does. I got a speedlight for christmas and am playing with it.

Jaimie, this picture speedlite is in remote, on top of the tank pointed down. A little stark if you ask me.
http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad95/Second_Hand_Pat/DSC_1550_zpsd66525a0.jpg
Here the speedlite is point up with the top of a styro box lid on top of the speedlite. A softer effect.
A little too dark

Getting there Pat, that last one the colors are excellent and no shadows on the body. I wish I had the setup to do a soft box or bounce box above the tank....a bit hard when the tank doesn't have a top though LOL. If the second picture were a bit lighter it would be great.

On that last picture
F-stop f/4.8
Exposure time 1/60 sec
ISO speed ISO-100
Focal length 62mm
Max aperture 4.5
anything else?

Thanks Matt, I also seem to take picture in the most difficult conditions. I never "set it up" but instead deal with the condition at hand.

Are ur settings consistent with the other shots? But I agree last is real good. Maybe bouncing is ur answer

Jaimie, I really just need to sit down and play with the settings. I am allowing the camera to do the work. Bouncing definitely helps.

Your camera is looking at the subject thinking it needs more light, so it's setting it up automatically as if there was no flash. That's why they are too bright. I will look at my camera tonight and tell u what mine is set on.

Try f stop at 5.6 exposure speed 1/50 and ISO 200 with these settings I just lower ISO if too dark and increase if too bright
